On Libra Scale, he remains a charming falsetto vocalist with strong echoes of Michael Jackson, and his knack for romantic lyrics and sweet melodies is more than enough to entertain without a far-fetched story arc.

The level of sophistication -- arrangements with subtle details, the frequency of slow tempos, a couple well-trodden motifs -- lends itself to a couple tepid tunes, but Ne-Yo remains a premier source of R&B that is both traditional and contemporary.

If he continues in this vein, he may accrue enough psychological chinks in the armor to truly follow in MJ’s paranoid footsteps. At the moment, though, it feels like a remarkably groovy one-off.

His strength remains his fluid melody-writing, which saves many an otherwise mundane track here.

I like this record, but this is way more reminiscent of Michael Jackson and Usher than I remember it being as a kid. That doesn't mean this album isn't without it's own unique flair. One In A Million is by far the best track on the album, but I also liked What Have I Done?, Beautiful Monster, and Genuine Only. A lot of the lyrics are questionable, they aren't uh,... good. But it's not a bad project, just very much feels like he's trying too hard to be someone ... read more
