After over a decade of silence, Phantom Planet returned with one of their strongest albums to date. Even though in my eyes it will be hard for the group to ever top their 2002 album The Guest, this album sees the band adapt to the modern age while still keeping their youthful California energy. The highlights are brilliant and sharp (as always,) but there’s too many low effort pop tunes surrounding them. Felt like they were punching way under their weight a lot of the time. Also wish it had more original material; a handful of the tracks are decent to middling renditions of Alex’s solo work. BUUUT hey, I’m really just happy to have them back.
