What a weird, scuzzy, reactionary minor masterpiece. A fantastic, if somewhat bold, followup to their commercial breakthrough that, in the right ways, rejects the polish of what made California a big hit. Most importantly, it maintains what made Phantom Planet so sweet in the first place. Sharp, punchy, sweet but never saccharine, power-pop with some well needed muscle, punch and spice. Aged really well.
Phantom Planet - Phantom Planet (2004)
A greatly underrated and underappreciated record from a band that is probably seen as a one hit wonder ("California") for most. I've been returning to this one on and off for almost two decades now and for some reason I keep coming back to it. Very consistent, engaging and energetic throughout it's brisk 35 minute duration.

i like an album that starts off with an ending. i also like the line of thought that jumps between all the songs, emphasizing the passing of time and love.
