Every track sounds like it has been meticulously crafted to perfection ... This album is utterly flawless.
If only his songs were as memorable as his sounds! True, Now is more song-centric than his previous releases, barring possibly his debut, but this is still well-crafted mood music in which the overall seductive sound matters more than what he's saying specifically.
Much like Sade’s Lovers Rock, Maxwell’s third studio effort, Now, faithfully delivers more of the same.
This album feels like a smooth and groovy black party. Everything from the singing to the instruments and little background melodies is perfect, It reminds me of mama's gun and voodoo a bit, but this album is even groovier, and I didn't feel bored throughout the entire listen.

The coolest and sexiest, neo-soul singer around is convinced that "NOW", with its safe structure, will lead him to the number one spot, nice and slow, without further effort.

Now was Maxwell’s way of returning to a more current style of RnB. While Embrya was extremely experimental, Now was more marketable and mainstream. Though that’s not to say that this album is basic, because songs like “W/As My Girl” or “For Lovers Only” have great folk / country fusions.
