The music on Bitter isn’t any less of a fusion than the records Ndegeocello put out before and after it. It may be her simplest, starkest record, feeling years older than it is, like wood floors creaking underfoot; but that doesn’t keep it from being a soul record, just a soul retreated inward, a door closed behind it—instead of witnessing its full force, you glimpse the evocative shadows of its movements.
This is such a pretty album and I love the lyricism! Her voice is lovely but wish it did a bit more! Absolutely love the intimacy of the album but at times it does feel a little empty or hollow! The end of Wasted Time confused the fuck out of me and I thought I accidentally skipped it…
Unfortunately, this time, she has taken herself too seriously, sacrificing part of her inner strength in needless demonstrations of annoying bitterness.
She could use a little bit of sugar to make things better...
