Head by Nik Raicevic (or possibly Head or Nik Pascal, who knows) is listed on RYM as the earliest space ambient album and I'd say it's pretty good. It consists of three tracks each named after and clearly inspired by three different drugs which feature the same melodies but edited in different ways.
