No matter how loud they shout, they can't hide the obvious weaknesses of an album that is struggling to survive as a caricature of a pre-announced death.
Oh, oh god. My comfort band slowly dissolving into mindless slop and is refusing to try and change or improve their sound for the greater good of the band. You heard that right, somehow Devo has continued their downward spiral into the shit tier for their music with Shout, this thing feels so lifeless as the repetitive songwriting and basic instrumentals feel so easy and forgettable. Devo's "Shout" album is often looked down upon because it isn't the same style as the Devo albums previous. "Shout" focuses more on synth and electronic sounds more than their previous affairs, and the chugging new wave/punk hybridization converts to a pounding electronic message of both hope and despair. Subjectively, the tone is very different, but the message remains the same. All in all, this could be a Devo that truly was "through being cool."
