Dork
A record that doesn’t just thrill, but empowers too, it’s enough to put MUNA firmly amongst the highest echelon of modern pop bands. Quite possibly the album of the year so far.
100
The Observer
Released from the shackles of a major label, the California trio emerge with a euphoric third album of stomping pop, country and ambient pulses.
100
The Line of Best Fit
It’s amazing to see a band that are so unapologetically queer excel at their craft and create an album that is quite possibly, if not certainly, their masterpiece.
95
Still Listening

MUNA is a band who knows who they are. They have and will always continue to carve out their own space, be their own voice, and never pigeonhole their sound.

90
Clash
MUNA are still our favourite three-piece queer band making music straight from their giant hearts, but they're offering something new with 'MUNA' - evolving, inspiring, and taking us along for the [horse] ride. We can't wait to see where they corral us next.
90
Loud and Quiet

Its musical brightness and self-acceptance are the album’s defining characteristics.

86
Northern Transmissions
It’s a perfectly produced summer album that allows desire to drive decisions, but most of all, it’s just a hell of a lot of fun.
82
Beats Per Minute

Arriving at the tail-end of pride month, but at the beginning of Summer, MUNA is the best soundtrack one can find for the next few months.

80
DIY
A celebratory expression of queer love that loses none of the trio’s magic.
80
The Telegraph

The album is both consistently breezy and emotionally upfront, going to-and-fro between galvanising dance anthems and gentle, psychedelic country ballads à la Kacey Musgrave’s Golden Hour.

80
NME
After being dropped by their label the three-piece had to regroup – but find a new level of freedom in this liberating era.
80
Gigwise
With a collection of bangers, slow tunes and refreshing melodies, MUNA are magic. They’ve created a space for all to lose themselves into for a little while, whether to dance or cry, they’re here to carve through the monotony and troubles of daily life and transport us to a different, brighter, louder, prouder, and safer place.
80
The Forty-Five

MUNA’s self-titled record is one of personal discovery as well as the creative highlight from a band that has never felt so sure of itself.

80
RIOT

Cycling from break up, to self discovery, to self care, and the band enter a new phase of confidence and positivity. Sustaining their classic sound, MUNA are the same, but they’ve grown: optimistic and unstoppable.

80
PopMatters
Synthpop trio MUNA craft an LP boldly exploring how being queer is composed of both joys and traumas, and that there’s no shame in messily embracing both.
79
Spectrum Culture
Throughout their self-titled album, MUNA demonstrates their effortless songwriting and collaborative abilities across songs narrating stories of queer love and heartbreak. It has everything from the moody and low-key, to summery indie anthems.
78
Pitchfork
The Los Angeles trio steps fully into their role as pop stars and mentors, offering gentle instructions for falling in love, dusting yourself off, and joyfully living your truth.
70
Exclaim!
When Gavin reaches those highs, it emits a monstrous amount of something our world lacks: queer joy
70
Crack Magazine

On MUNA, the group, who once jokingly described themselves as “queer electro synth pop country alt religious rock band”, freewheel through saccharine pop, moody synths and playful strokes of R&B.

65
Under the Radar

It feels as if the group has grown from the introspective and therapeutic Save the World and is grasping onto ideas of self-worth that exist within their songs. In a world that is oppressive towards so many in queer communities, this album does something radical—it finds something to celebrate.

60
AllMusic

["Silk Chiffon"] starts things off with a candy-coated bang, and while the rest of the album never quite reaches that level of instantaneous pop gratification, Muna still turn in some of their better songs from there while also taking their sound to new places.

Edit: this has grown on me more. 80 to 85

MUNA is a really fun and great pop record with catchy songwriting and fantastic highlights, even if as a whole it doesn’t necessarily hit the level I hoped it could.

MUNA was a group I had heard about before, but only really listened to after seeing them open for Phoebe Bridgers. They were great live, and I added a bunch of their songs when checking them out before the concert. I didn’t listen to either of their projects in full, but I ... read more

it is so refreshing to hear a band feel so in tune with their identities but also feel so comfortable under different sonic textures. MUNA touches so many aspects of what it's like grow out of a old relationship, finding yourself, and growing as a person. The number one thing that stands out across the album is the production. Whether it's vocals being shifted and molded, weird atmospheric synths that mesmerize you, or stadium-shaking drums, they really keep you on your toes with each shifting ... read more

MUNA's self titled album couldn't reflect the band more, it's exactly the type of fun/escapist music that I love them from. I still adore the previous album more but I'll definitely grow to love this bit by bit too; The band itself feels much more connected to their lyrics and sound even more, the confidence is exuding and it's lovely as usual.

This record was my gateway into MUNA, as Mic the Snare included this record in his top albums of 2022 list. So I went away and gave it a listen and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not perfect, I have no idea why Solid is so short? But, I was impressed by the songwriting and Katie's vocals. If you love synthpop like me then I am sure you will find something in this record to enjoy! The first half of the record is so strong, and What I Want is one of the best pop songs ever!!!

diva alert. no idea and solid are so fucking good sonically I'm gagged. overall, I thought some tracks could be more exciting and banging, but it was a pleasant ride on a warm spring afternoon that left a charming impression on me

The album that first introduced me to MUNA, and maybe that's why I have a bit of bias towards it but I genuinely do think it has a super consistent tracklist, and honestly it'd be perfect if it weren't for the last 2 tracks, which just feel a bit unnecessary to me. Other than that I really love how diverse the sounds on this album are, since even though danceable songs like What I Want aren't really the main focus here, I do really enjoy them! But where I think this project ... read more
