Exclaim!

On Sept. 5, dvsn establish themselves as the cutting edge of post-millennial soul music, electrifying, absorbing and, at their best, downright mind-blowing.

83
Pitchfork
This group is wise and capable enough to eschew nearly every shortcut of today's personality-first music culture and dial into the silence between the noise. It's what confidence sounds like.

NOW Magazine

Unlike many of their peers, dvsn go for the jugular, convincingly channelling the warmth, grace and precision of 90s staples Jodeci and Brownstone on their Sept. 5th album by mixing classic gospel-R&B vocal arrangements with modern touches.

Pretty Much Amazing

Despite some glaring issues, Sept. 5th manages to stay listenable, and offers occasional glimpses of genuine inspiration.

60
AllMusic
Here's some more narcotic, dimly lit R&B balladry from Drake's Warner-supported OVO Sound label, this time courtesy of duo dvsn.
40
PopMatters

As a whole, it eschews the current R&B trend of existing within multiple genres or creating a genre unto itself, and the collection is unengaging because of it.

a perfect album for this time of year just moody and vibey enough

Something just really clicked with me listening to this again. Nothing on here is really boundary pushing or offering much variation track to track lyrically or stylistically. But the production and overall mood and vibe I can’t help but get overwhelmed by and yeah simple as that really.

With me is pure sex btw.

I get why people wouldn’t like this, as it’s not groundbreaking and the lyrics can be incredibly cringey, but I love this album. The production is phenomenal, and I just think it is a great R&B project with well written and well produced songs.

Fav Tracks: With Me, Too Deep, Try / Effortless, Do It Well, Sept 5th, Hallucinations, The Line

Best Song: Too Deep/Hallucinations
Favourite Song: Too Deep/With Me

Such a horny album. Crazy vocals that definitely felt unprecedented at the time when mixed with this type of production. A worthy debut but I do feel like the songs sounded better back then, than now. They're also a lot longer than I remember but that could be more a reflection of how short today's songs are now, rather than an indictment against this record. Enjoyable nonetheless.

ANNIVERSARY REVIEW 284

I'm a sucker for Canadian R&B and I do think it's an R&B classic but how tf is this higher than PND1/2 and Alone At Prom
