Chapter II is enjoyable, it’s worth a listen through once; as given it’s so broad and diverse, it would be hard for the listener to not find one song they could listen to again. The disappointment for many will be shining through though, and while Benga may gain more exposure, many will feel he’s compromising his art in the process.
Though it's not perfect, and in some ways treads water, Chapter II is simply Benga being himself, trying to wrap all of his various dimensions as a producer together. If it is uneven, that's because there's much more here than is necessary, rather than a sad dearth of ideas.
In 2002, the then-16 year-old Croydon DJ Benga released his first single, “Skank”, an exploratory 2-step track that took equal parts inspiration from dark garage experimentalist Wookie, grime, and the beginnings of dubstep. With the release of his third full-length, Chapter II, one thing is clear: this is not that Benga.
