When It’s Going Wrong does a lot with very little. The nine-track album lasts barely over 19 minutes—a downright astonishing runtime, given how developed and complete it sounds. Tricky’s arrangements, inventive and fast-shifting as ever, account for part of this, but the credit also lies in Marta’s gift for beckoning you into the mood.
When I first saw Tricky I thought this would be a collaborative project, but no it's just Tricky on production with an unknown Marta on vocals, and I'm sorry but she really does not interest me at all. The shallow production interests me more then her very basic voice, it's almost like she is talking over each track. Marta Złakowska met Tricky in 2017 and, since then, they have been working together, a collaboration that resulted to this (mini) album, written and produced by Tricky, a debut that watches, awkwardly, its unfinished reflection and feels that it's going wrong.
This is genuinely some of the most boring trip hop I've ever heard. The vocalist Marta sounds like a discount Billie Eilish and sings in such a lifeless manner she might as well cure my insomnia.
Don't bother listening to this unless you want something to make you fall asleep quickly from boredom.
