Overall, While She Sleeps have created their magnum-opus. Self Hell is the band at their very best.
Staying true to their creative principles, Self Hell marks a band in the form of their lives.
Self Hell doesn’t always successfully navigate the difficult terrain between pleasing a hardcore following and broadening a sound, but the band certainly aren’t standing still.
It’s insipid, repetitive, cringey, it’s self-important with nothing to say, it’s sound and fury, except it’s not even that furious. It is everything wrong with modern metalcore, contained within 45 agonizing minutes. I’m almost glad that While She Sleeps has found themselves in Self Hell. It means that there’s nowhere for them to go but up.
Despite turning out a tad bit better than some of us expected, "SELF HELL" while sounding like a Metalcore parody album, manages to still carry some decent moments in it, and not many complete duds.
I'm one of the few people who don't mind when Metalcore bands try something more Alternative. Many of WSS's contemporaries have been doing so, some working out quite well and some completely butchering their sound. However, if that change is executed well, it can actually work out even ... read more
While She Sleeps release an album that is filled with generic and messy ideas that aren't executed well.
I'm just gonna start listing songs and what I didn't like about them. The first track, "PEACE OF MIND," doesn't even have a proper transition into the next track. A lot of the drops on this album aren't very rewarding and can come across as anticlimactic, like the ending breakdown on "LEAVE ME ALONE." The title track has really goofy lyrics even ... read more
... read more
One of my biggest disappointments. How did we get here? After four really good albums, the series suddenly stops. We still hope they’ll do much better in the years to come.
To the flowers, is an incredible song that really don't deserve to be surrounded by the rest of the project.
This album is not nearly as bad as everyone says, as for many bands in this genre the second they want to be creative or break out of their current sound most metalcore fans slam the new projects with negativity. Now I won't sit here and say this album is perfect as it's far from it but this album does do some interesting things that work and though the inclusion of synths work good most of the time some places they feel not as fleshed out or forced. In the end this nor a bad or good ... read more
I think I'm one of the people that will defend this Album. I love it when Bands are trying new things and they did that on here A LOT. And most of the times, it works!
Yeah but Leave Me Alone is horrible. The rest is either pretty good or even perfect in my opinion like Rainbows. I also like the Title Track. That Song is catchy as hell. They have some cool riffs on here and I like the Nu-Metal direction they're going in. Oh yeah and the closing Track is cool, but also kinda weird. ... read more
