It's insulting that this is even the same band as one of the greatest albums ever made. This lacks all creativity, personality, perspective, message, or performance talent in nearly every pocket of this project. Extremely disappointed.
I both get and don't get the hate. Imo it's really just an ok record. Obviously after the debut it's an insane downgrade and I understand why Comus fans weren't fond of it at the time and still aren't, but it's not even that bad of a listen. It may be disappointingly normal from a writing standpoint, but it still has a very similar and great production approach like First Utterance had. The vocals are top notch as well, the only issue is that they could've aimed for a more complex/advanced concept for the album instead of an almost pop rock focus. The last two tracks are especially weak in this regard, but it doesnt take away from the rest of the album being pretty good.
