It takes a bit from the ambient side of music, but is never boring, like ambient music can be sometimes, but always evocative. It is certainly an album to be played and replayed, and will I think be some people’s favorite record of the year.
It’s a powerful album, it’s a cool album. It’s worth your attention and might get you another new favorite band to follow, who are carving their own way in the DC and national indie music scene.
It doesn’t have some of the same hit power as older records from her direction, but every song is solid, and the album is an impressive showing.
Where some bands and artists reinvent themselves in something of a reductive fashion, Elbow, a band of almost 30 years, is still firing at all cylinders and as big and bold as ever.
In an album that reminds me of Arcade Fire’s incendiary entrance onto the modern rock stage in the early aughts—except turn the hards up even harder, and the softs down even softer!—they offer what promises to be one of the best releases of the year.
There is something understated about Lange’s music, with his soft voice and often subtle arrangements, but while he remains somewhat formulaic in his songs, there is always something ecstatic and transcendent about his music, as well.
