Stemming from the Boom Bap-derived Hip Hop style of the late 2000s and early 2010s, it is based on minimalist approaches to samples, looping them repeatedly with few or no other additions. It's named after the lack of (prominent) drums, as these usually come from the sample itself, untouched, rather soft and laid-back.
Drumless is often seen as an underground and radical version of Boom Bap, as the rapping style is very similar to that of the classic genre. Roc Marciano is considered one of the main and first producers of the genre, influenced by Gangsta Rap and the production of The Alchemist and Madlib.
The collective Griselda, which includes the likes of Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Benny The Butcher, popularized the genre into the mainstream along with other major acts such as Earl Sweatshirt - thus playing into the genre's connection to Abstract Hip Hop.
