This is Kanye at his most focused moment. Huge orchestration, tight songwriting, and a clear sense of purpose. There is an importance for every beat. Tracks like "Roses" or "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" are highlights in the storytelling aspect of the album. The size of the project doesn’t hide the emotion and meaning of Kanye's transitions, it enhances it.
A pointless creative effort from an artist far from his golden age. The bars seem recycled, the punchlines are soft and the energy is gone. However, the real crime of this project is the production as the beat selection was questionable. Wayne was given horrible beats to support himself. It's not bad from an entertainment point of view, but it's bad from a forgettable, empty point of view.
It feels like a playlist created out of obligation. No real direction, no striking ideas beyond the single track "CHAMPAIN & VACAY". A rare case where Travis and his other JACKBOYS members seem uninspired across the album. Even 21 Savage as background noise doesn't really hold weight.
A revolution. An album that has become the template for a new era of auto-tune in hip-hop and much more. Not every song hits the spot, but the impact is enormous and Kanye's desire to sit in discomfort makes this album sound even more significant over time.
Hard and raw. An experimental record that takes risks most artists would never take. It's not easy to get into, but impossible to ignore. Once you get the hang of it, you will get the hang of it.
