Julia Kent - Temporal

"Last Hour Story" is a punishingly beautiful opening track, that holds the kind of high strung tension painted across all those quivering orchestral affairs, arms swaying, black ties and champagne mixed in with decadence, a chandelier hanging above the preforming orchestra, one note too high and it could all come crashing down.

"Imbalance" does what its name suggest, it creates this sort of counter balance to the image first conjured by way of invasive electronic chirpings, that rise then fall into background, at first its deeply un-welcomed but by the time "Imbalance" reaches its highest swell, everything is in its right place and you cannot differentiate electronic from any other member of the orchestra at work, every sound all strings in the swaying hands of Julia Kent's.

"Sheared" brings a rhythm to the tension of the record, violins shift back and forth from the push and pull effect of its electronic parts and darkened bass strings, that marries mood and rhythm in the way Ares & Aphrodite must have when caught in bed by golden net. Too many times, classical music can become cold and unflinching but "Sheared" really gives the record a body.

Overall, this is a great piece of modern classical music with a breathtaking end and above all shows how to successfully marry electronic with classical. This may be the most elegant marrying of the two sounds I've heard in a while especially considering not a single note was sung.

Favourites: Sheared, Through the Window, Crepuscolo.
