Production 10/10 - the fade in of the acoustic guitar, set the tone for the track even before Harry makes a sound. The instrumentation of the record is very simplistic, a simple drum beat, simple guitar strumming into a loop (a ukulele in the shadows too?) and a quietly brilliant bassline. When the piano comes in whoever produced this did the brilliant thing of pushing the piano to the front of the mix while Harry's voice is quieted even though he stays in the same register, brilliant.
Vocal Performance 7/10 - Harry stays in the upper register of his voice for most if not all of the song, this isn't a bad thing and I'm not complaining, just pointing it out. The choir does an outstanding job for this track, they really carry the concept of the record with this sort of pre-chorus up-liftment thats almost gospel in its nature.
Lyrics 2/10 - I mean the lyrics are in-coherent, and they switch mood and meaning so much you'd get whiplash, I sort of wish he was singing this song in another language because then i would have really enjoyed it. Like most things that lean to the pop-side, lyrics are forgotten, just made up to go along with the sonic structure of the track
" What do you mean?
I'm sorry by the way "
- this seems like the writer listened to Justin Biebers "What do you mean" and "Sorry" and thought hmm thats catchy. At best this establishes a confusion, which makes it seem plausible that he is dazed and speaking in split views.
"Never coming back down
Can't you see?" - Again it sounds nice but isn't attached at all to the previous lines nor do these two lines compliment each other. At best, it can be said to be written from the perspective of one side of a conversation, again its terribly executed and conceptually falls apart.
I could, but wouldn't stay - A great one-liner.
Chorus:
All the lights couldn't put out the dark
Runnin' through my heart - even the delivery doesn't seem to match what he is saying here
Lights up and they know who you are
Know who you are
Do you know who you are? (Oh) - a good continuation of the light symbolism, plus a seemingly personal line for someone always in the spot light, however doesn't match the tone of the preceding two lines.
Its a lyrical performance strung together by one-liners and ambiguous thoughts, which hint at the CONCEPT of the track, but for a concept to come through, the lyrical performance needs to do a lot more than hint, at best I can say hmm, ambiguous is the point of the track, but even so, its a pop trick we've seen wayy too many times to not know what you are.
Conclusion: a well constructed tune, that just needed some meaning or a decent writer.
Unfortunately it requires a certain amount of intelligence that seems to be lacking.
