i haven't really ever gotten the slayyyter hype, but i was hoping a full project would open my eyes and maybe make it connect a bit more. i also understand that listening to this in a certain environment would maybe help its cause, but that's just the thing: i don't see this album as the fun party experience that seemingly everyone else does. i absolutely love music in this sphere so i was really excited to check slayyyter out for the first time last year, and from then until now ... read more
flea is obviously a great bassist and has a super positive public image and maybe he is a really genuinely nice guy, but he's been close friends and bandmates with anthony kiedis for decades. openly talking about how much he loves him and how close they are. instantly disqualifies me from ever taking him serious or respecting him as a person. really unfortunate.
the heavier moments here actually have some punch to them and there’s definitely substance lyrically. i even kinda like the quirky vocal approach more times than i don’t. but man she has to stay far far away from trap beats. like legendarily poor pairing there. i'm not trying to be agist, but she's 72. and it sounds like that.
the album also just feels really fragmented and unfinished. the ideas don’t flesh out nearly enough for me to see them as anything more than ... read more
unfortunately a little less impactful of a listen than his 2024 project under heylog. i think the direction as an idea is a good one and some of the ideas show promise, but the execution comes off a little pigeonholed and one-note overall. epic soundscape with not enough actually interesting components behind the curtain to match. he’s unmistakably a talented producer and i think his best is yet to come, but this one was a bit of a step backward for me.
edit: underscores is a once-in-a-generation producer and i fully believe that with no limitations or qualifiers. no one can make the music she makes. she had fun here and expressed some heartache too. she expressed herself where she is and where she wants to be through poignant lyrics and a sound design that embodied and amplified their messages. and she gave us an opportunity to dance. this isn’t even her best effort to me, but it’s another otherworldly one, and one that sets ... read more
so i'm at almost 10 years of being a pretty huge dc fan and this is such a special listen for me. i knew the potential was limitless from the beginning and couldn't be prouder watching his artistry and musicality expand with every release, especially as of late. and with him having been working on multiple (distinct sounding) projects simultaneously for some time now, this feels like the first of a sort of new, unique era for dc, and if it's anything to take as precedent quality ... read more
i'm consistently unsure that society adequately recognizes how lucky we all collectively are to have underscores.
i don't know what's happening with this rollout at this point but none of these songs have done it for me and the fact that they are so different and consistently sound unfinished makes me even more scared for how messy the album seems like it's going to be.
nowhere near their worst but it's just kinda boring and also annoyed me by actually presenting some pretty interesting musical ideas at the beginning and then proceeding to do absolutely nothing in the way of expanding upon them throughout the song.
i'm convinced this group was made for me. one of my favorite artists of the past decade plus in zel pairing with multiple of my favorite artists of the past few years, and such a unique combo at that. even though it isn't even the full group here, this is a great introduction. super smooth, great verses, love bk on the hook, spooky and entertaining throughout, and really replayable. great start.
definitely commend him for going in a new direction and trying to do something different and, from a production standpoint, he was largely successful. it just sucks how uninteresting the vocals are to go along with it.
ignoring the cringe delivery, this thing consistently just sounds like it was made on audacity. there are decent musical ideas, but even they land few and far between by the end. really grating listen in almost every way possible.
just so painfully generic and uninteresting to the point where it sabotages any attempt at coming off genuine. unfortunately a very standard pop ballad pitfall. it's all just so soulless and boring.
i've never heard of her before but i'm locked in now this was so much fun; i love all the synth textures and the vocal performance was really impressive too, especially for this style. all of the components moved super well and made everything so entertaining for the whole runtime. definitely gonna check out some of her previous releases and keep an eye out for more in the future.
super layered, consistently fun and so technically well crafted. he's still got it.
i've never heard of this artist but i think both of these tracks are super catchy and play with some interesting sounds. the style blend here is really cool and while the tracks wear their influences on their sleeves pretty clearly, they execute them all really well and clearly have quite a bit of their own personality too.
silly and unfortunately not in the mostly positive way we’re used to bruno being
