Spill Magazine

Honora sonically represents Flea’s soulful journey in his pursuit of the greatest reaches of his creativity and, in doing so, stumbles upon greatness in a record that feels completely unprecedented.

Hot Press
Brilliant solo effort from Chili Peppers man.

NME

A quietly accomplished jazz project.

The Line of Best Fit

The Los Angeles-based musician proves capable of holding his own in the company of such virtuoso luminaries from the International Anthem label family as guitarist Jeff Parker (also of Tortoise), bassist Anna Butterss and saxophonist Josh Johnson, who also produced the album.

80
Clash
In ‘Honora’, Flea has found a way to redefine his humble musical roots, far from a vanity project, it’s a deeply considered, richly textured body of work. His debut project is a captivating moment from a musician reconnecting with the very essence of why he started in the first place, and an artist still chasing new meanings in his rich age.
80
The Guardian
Imaginative interpretations of Funkadelic and Frank Ocean sit alongside starry collaborations and gorgeous instrumentals on the bassist’s brassy side project.
80
Uncut

Maybe this could have been two different records: the big-name covers album and the back-room jam session. But in terms of conveying the passions, frustrations and intriguing contractions of its restless instigator, Honora is perfect.

80
Mojo
Flea proves to be a nice rather than barnstorming trumpeter, allbeit a subtly ambitious sone: witness his Chet Bakerish take on Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. But ultimately, he respects the collectivist energies of the LA scene he's infiltrated.
80
The Arts Desk

'Honora' is a fine album which should certainly get plenty of attention and plaudits.

73
Pitchfork
The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist reignited his childhood love of the trumpet to make his first solo album: a mature, sophisticated collection of songs featuring stars of the L.A. jazz scene.
70
AllMusic

Ultimately Honora is bold and beautifully played, with atmospheric production adorned in warmth, soul, and passion.

Exclaim!

Flea assembled a crack band of jazz masters for Honora, including Anna Butters, a bassist so good they can hang with him. Yet it's the more minimal, pensive tracks that really shine here, Flea's trumpet drenched equally in reverb and emotion.

70
Classic Rock

As first albums go, Honora is a risky play, but it’s one that just about manages to pay off.

60
musicOMH
A fascinating, if sometimes flawed, labour of love from the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist.
60
Record Collector
This is a reasonably entertaining album.

Spectrum Culture
Flea is no doubt an exceptional bassist, but this record does nothing to dispel the myth that he’s anything more than a sideman.

YES FLEA YEEEEESS I LOVE YOU ❤

Wow, after over 40 years with the Chili Peppers, Flea dropped his FIRST album and showed his full talent with multiple instruments and genres, and made this masterpiece. I cant believe what im seeing and hearing rn...

Somehow, we still have at least a lil bit of RHCP in fucking 2026 to bless the biggest RHCP glazer right here...

Well, now i am 100% sure that this is a great year for music... 🙌🏻

Better review later guys! ✌🏻

While I may not be a fan of RHCP whatsoever, I am a fan of the individual members and their respective talents much like Flea's wonderful bass playing skills. Now after an over 40 year career in music, he has finally decided to venture out on his own and release his first ever solo debut album, Honora. This project is a solid mix of covers and original pieces from Flea which I found to be very interesting as the places where the covers are sourced from are all wildly different than one ... read more

Flea pleading us to indulge him (along with Thom Yorke and Nick Cave) in his late-stage passion for the trumpet. It's his jam.

Review #47 of 2026

If you ask: Why did it take so long for Flea to show this deeply-coded aspect of his artistry? Because Honora, while it sounds like traditional Freestyle Lounge, it's actually the result of a lifetime's gathering of inspiration and company, featuring surprises that will always strike a nerve.
