rating is more symbolic/obligatory than representative of any sort of scale. this album is not numerically ratable. it's hardly an album and i've only exposed myself to it once. what a gut-wrenching reminder of the unrelenting, unforgiving, infinitely unfair cruelty of existence.
i am so mad at myself for not getting around to this when it came out, especially given how much i've always enjoyed what i've heard from juno over the years. comparatively to that earlier output though, there is a night and day improvement here. as in, he's seriously painting himself as one of the most promising young songwriters if he continues on this trajectory, especially considering he only just turned 20 years old two days ago as of the time of this review.

i haven't listened to a ton of music that sounds like this in the past, but i can say that i absolutely will in the future. for an album with approximately zero (discernible) lyrics, there is so much emotional potency here. the screams themselves and where they're placed in the mix, as well as the playing and the pacing of the tracklist truly do all collectively embody the title of the album. this is a rollercoaster of tragedy that is so brutal that all you can possibly feel at the ... read more
absolute elsewhere is more or less the beginning of my journey through the 2024 albums that i missed during the year. the biggest appeal of this is the instrumentation. everything is played very technically and intentionally; you can tell there was a lot of thought put behind the movements and cohesion of the instruments. it's exciting, mathy (non-derogatory), and unpredictable to the max. to be honest, the actual metal is the least interesting thing on here in my opinion, and it's ... read more
well he did it again. i may be crazy, but i think this is tyler's most ambitious and emotionally mature record ever. those two qualities aren't really related in and of themselves, but they shined through as the two primary bright spots on an album gleaming with things to appreciate. to me, this felt like an amalgamation of so many of the approaches tyler has been trying (and succeeding!) to tackle his last three albums with, all condensed into one complete, updated package. the songs ... read more
phil elverum my beloved. night palace has easily some of the most thought provoking and genuinely touching bits of lyricism on any piece of music this year. literature put to sound. and while it may not be for everyone, phil's brand of homespun lofi recordings will never cease to captivate me. the runtime and number of tracks may be daunting, but i found that, much like his other projects, things start to blend together once you let yourself fall into his world, and by the end you're ... read more
julie have been my most promising new band since i first heard their "pushing daisies" ep, and they became my favorite band when they released "pg.4 a picture of three hedges," which is one of the best songs so far this decade in my opinion. at its best, this album is the perfect merger of grunge, noise, and hard rock, with elements of indie rock and shoegaze sprinkled right on top. it's dark, hazy, and carries a confident personality, haunting the listener with what ... read more
computer man discovers guitars and talks about his feelings. it's the catchiest, most well produced, perfectly structured, genre combo extravaganza of an album this year has to offer. such a mesmerizing listen that keeps on giving spin after spin.
a bit inconsistent, but some of the most fun music of the year at its best. these guys have massive potential.
kendrick's best since to pimp a butterfly and his third best ever. a truly perfect merger of his styles instrumentally topped by a perfect harmony of the lyrical ferocity we've come to expect of recent and the lyrical depth we've come to expect forever. he commands his presence in all of its different forms and the respective features step up and match his energy every time. i also can't help but mention that this record is track sequencing 101. the perfect pacing combined ... read more
despite the massive praise, this band continues to do virtually nothing for me and it's truly a shame. i don't choose to be the odd one out and i can understand the appeal of the music to an extent, but almost nothing on the past two records has connected with me personally.
the vocals are unimpressive and sort of pass you by naturally and the melodies come off clunky and awkward more often than not. the instrumental passages, specifically the guitar work, will blow you away at one ... read more

i'd never heard of Dillom before this, but i don't plan on missing out anymore. what a unique combination of styles executed in such a skillful and expressive way. i don't even understand the language and yet i feel like i completely got to know the guy within 35 minutes. a true thrill ride. this is awesome.
genuinely really glad she's okay. musically though, the sound of this just isn't that interesting and a lot of the tracks overstay their welcome.
sound choice, vocals, and playing are great throughout the record, but song structure, melodies, and compelling arrangement are where it falls short for me. i'm consistently left thinking that more could've been done with what was laid out. hell is near and big time nothing are bops though.
