Kendrick Lamar's album debut is a great starter for hip hop's highest climbing artist, with the establishing of Kendrick's ideas and themes amongst his incredibly diverse and potent track list that brings him with shining lights into the rap world.

Although some songs don't hold up too well, the majority do and they're booming anthems for the then rising K Dot. Having Fuck Your Ethnicity, Hol' Up and A.D.H.D back to back is honestly disgusting, because it's three absolute wrecking balls of tracks used to smash the album open to an explosive start. From then on, topics like racism, rape (and the general disregard of women) and rising up against the power are key themes which helps to explore the mind of Lamar. There's some powerful stuff in here and Kendrick doesn't pull punches, instead he goes straight first into them. I will say though, sometimes his lyricism can be a tiny bit cornier than his later albums, mainly due to his unrefined early status, but with time he obviously only improves on his word play.
