the first time i listened to this in the summer of 2021 i was absolutely spellbound by the first track: implacably nostalgic (the piano melody teleports me to a mall in the mid-2010s) with lyrics that deeply resonated with my immediate post-covid lockdown mental state. after that first track, however, i completely bounced off the rest of the album for some reason, but it did introduce me to the films of shunji iwai, whose "all about lily chou chou" is a film that also completely went ... read more
me for like two weeks: wow this is awsome i lvoe car seat headrest!!!
anyway a month later the recency bias has worn off and i honestly have no desire to revisit this album. it sounds good (really like deveraux) but especially after going through nervous young man and how to leave town again i just don't find it very compelling.
shaking my head while listening to this song so people know i'm aware it's problematic
if miku popped out of my phone singing this bullshit when i was going through a depressive episode i would just pull the trigger
monochromatic nightmare/dreamscape, analogue horror punctuated by clicks of a cassette player. i've seen david lynch and silent hill brought up a lot but although those might be closer musically the experience of listening to this album really reminded me of Mica Levi's score for The Zone of Interest, especially the overture; helplessly sitting in the dark as the waves take you. music you really have to surrender to. idk i liked it though
perfect album, and probably my favorite modern rendition of a greek myth in general. beautiful storytelling complemented by a folky, uniquely american atmosphere. hades's voice faintly coming in during epic pt. 2 has me sobbing every time. my only real issue is that it's missing a couple of great songs that were later added to the broadway musical(coughcough chant coughcough), but i prefer this one in every other aspect.
like a wave of pure catharsis crashing on the listener. or, in the words of every other review of this album, "raw." will be returning to this one regularly, and hopefully i'll be able to articulate in more detail what i love about it in a month or so. no idea why I was filtered by this in 2021 when i was able to listen to the fucking numbered csh albums perfectly fine.
don't ask me what i mean by this but this feels like the evil gooner version of clairo's charm
an album hasn't made my soul float out of my body like this since titanic rising
