Perhaps, a guilty pleasure? Also some of these songs are just blatantly misinterpreted for the sake of misinterpretation (or illiteracy?). For example, Ruin the Friendship is most certainly not high school roleplay but a genuine look back at regrets after time does away at friends. I promise I love Deftones…but sonically this is nothing new—adequate at best. Lyrically, gaudy and nearing on edgelord. Lowercase styling and vague mental health subject matter just doesn’t add to their dynamic range; or maybe it does, by establishing a new unexpected low.
