Classic Rock
The whole thing breathes fire.
90
PopMatters
When even Tori Amos – reliably bold, confrontational, disarming – has found her voice dampened by the ceaseless shock and awe of our daily life, we’re in trouble.
90
AllMusic

The vital In Times of Dragons whisks Amos back to hallowed days, penetrating the soul and shaking foundations in a manner that hasn't been heard since Pele, Choirgirl, Scarlet, or Posse.

90
Spill Magazine

In Times of Dragons is Amos at the top of her game.

God Is in the TV
Another strong album from Tori Amos, that reveals more and more with each successive play. Hopefully the time of these particular dragons will soon be over, yet I think, nay, know, that Tori Amos will always have something knew to say. There’s many of us here who still want to hear it.

Modern world anxieties and perils are filtered through the lens of ancient myth. A richly rewarding work results.
80
Record Collector
A mythical exploration of resistance.
80
Albumism

Spanning 17 tracks, Amos’ latest release In Times of Dragons takes the form of an epic, weaving the tale of a woman trapped in an abusive marriage to a slimy, reptilian billionaire husband and critiques the authoritarian odiousness of our current oligarchy through this allegory.

80
Mojo
Myths, muses, lizard demons and a parable for Trumpian times.
80
Uncut
Amos’ 18th is a cry of defiance in the new face of tyranny.
80
Under the Radar

What In Times of Dragons does really well is capture a mood and replicate it throughout. The somber, low key songs show an Amos who is pissed off with the patriarchy and wants change. Her vocals have rarely sounded better.

70
Slant Magazine
The album traces the artist’s sojourn through a nation that’s turned into hell.
70
Rolling Stone
The singer-songwriter’s 18th album is full of fantastical imagery, moving emotions, and callbacks to her storied career.
70
The Line of Best Fit

In Times of Dragons puts love and solidarity at its core. While some will pick up charity gigs, Tori Amos turns this anxiety-ridden world into a dystopic epic with a swift turn of her pen-turned-sword.

68
Pitchfork
The veteran songwriter’s new album colorfully dramatizes the reptilian autocrats of American society, but suffers from the literalism that affects much politically reactive art today.
65
Spectrum Culture
Amos’ latest album is a lyrically complex album but doesn’t hit the mark sonically; it will best appeal to those willing to work to unpack its key themes.
60
The Irish Times
The LP tries to be both a plunge into Irish mysticism and an anti-Trump protest. The singer is reluctant to fully commit to either vision.

WOW, i genuinely have no words, typing this out is so hard, I don’t even know what to say. her referencing one of her most iconic works, “silent all these years” in shush, and how she missed the woman who wrote it, made me realize that maybe she wasn’t happy with her own output. so she came back with a BANGG, and released her best work since scarlets walk
i love you so much tori, you are a force to be reckoned with, and we all missed you ❤️

She’s so back! Her songwriting has not been this captivating for a long while! Sonically everything is so impressive! Shush is contender for best song in her discography! The biggest flaw with this album is that it could’ve had a few tracks left off as it suffers a bit from being bloated! Also a little confused why the three by far shortest tracks were put next to each other - I feel like the track listing would’ve been better if they were spread out!

A magnificent album by Tori Amos, an underrated legend of music in general, the best pianist, incredible, a monster in the studio. The first four songs are my favorites, along with the last one, which changed my life.
