Viagra Boys - Cave World
90
Viagra Boys cement their status as upcoming punk legends on Cave World.

This LP, much like their sophomore record, Welfare Jazz, is all over the place, and some of its experiments work better than others. However, where Welfare Jazz took a slight detour from the band's established sound, Cave World instead reaches new heights by mixing the various styles the band has progressed through over the years into one gross punky package. Jakey - ROMCOM

This project has solid production through and through, but Jakey's lyrics are vocals are very hit and miss. The lyrics have a lot of "shit dude you lost me" moments, but also work perfectly on tracks like Pine Barrens. This is a very impressive release for someone known as a YouTuber, and I do want to give his music a real chance. I think if he had someone help with his songwriting it would drastically improve his music.

the album art is horrendous. the mix is horrendous. the lyrics are just as bad and stuck in the coming of age purgatory that every other ajr song is in. the song keeps building up to nothing. there is no “holy shit you ruined this” moment, but boy if this isn’t boring as hell and cringe inducing.

Quadeca really needs to drop his YouTube rapper name and start going by his real name. It's genuinely cringe-inducing to transition from a song like Tell Me A Joke to Beamin. Regardless of the mess that his Spotify page is, this project is a masterpiece; I was legitimately blown away front to back. This is certainly a contender for AOTY.

Favorite tracks: ALL, but fantasyworld is something else.
Least favorite tracks: picking up hands? If i had to choose one.

Rina Sawayama - Hold The Girl

Hold The Girl is an admirable pop record, but I won't lie that it was a massive disappointment to me. Rina's debut album SAWAYAMA is leagues more interesting and had me really excited for her next project. I was most captivated by her ability to fuse pop with other genres such as metal, hyperpop, stadium rock, etc. Hold The Girl, by comparison is bland and safe, and there is no track that reaches the heights of SAWAYAMA.

The high points are the Shania Twain influenced anthem "This ... read more
