Floating Points - Cascade

Petition to rename www.albumoftheyear.org to www.cascade.org. Samuel Shepard is an alien. Wtf

System 7 - Power of Seven
96

With incredibly strong sequencing and thematic structure, the "Power of Seven" displays undisputed timeless electronic qualities that sustain attraction for the entire playback. A product worthy of more merit then its received, System 7's story has left me scrambled with more questions then answers. Its deep exploration within an analogue, progressive trance like median will place you in a new musical world full of many exciting possibilities akin to their large discography of ... read more

Sasha - Airdrawndagger
92

A timeless masterpiece kindled by its composition and mastering, drawn from an electric rave era that's expressively flourished over the years... ultimately aging like fine wine. In vein of Orbital's self titled LP "Orbital", you can conceptualize "Airdrawndagger" as a crafted live set seamlessly woven into an ambient, trance-like, rich in bass, break beat album with a deliberately refined electronic intention from start to finish.

Orbital - Orbital 2
94

Held up to unbelievable stature, "Orbital 2" can be considered as one of the most electronically polished productions of the past 30 years. A strong contender for most modern electronic releases as it challenges functional limitations set for its time. A sequenced journey that can still provoke a dance floor is rare and a tough balance to strike, but Orbital find refuge in strong hardware sounds that are progressively cut and placed over what you could recognise as a single one hour ... read more

Four Tet - Three
89

A timeless release etched into the Four Tet discography that compliments a familiar sound with fresh arrangements. Head bopping down tempo grooves, emotive ambience, and bright organic leads takes what we love from Kieren to a whole new level... where sonic clarity best performs. Its hard to press any highlights when you have a fulfilling journey from its inception to the perfectly resolved "Three Drums". My personal favourite "Skater" dives into an archived folktronic ... read more

Nils Frahm - Spaces
90

Conceptually this album is phenomenal. The detailed attention given to the creative development from start to finish has soared a unique hand picked sequence of recorded live shows around the world. The synthesis of classical piano tones and electronic medians left no stylistic choice un-used. A deep exploration of soulful sound, allowed to breathe in intricate hypnotic and progressive formats that yield profound emotions... "Says" being the most climatic.

Beyond the politics and current public image, Kanye's familiar modern sound is overall executed lesser than his earlier conceptual projects. There are moments where it can certainly fit as a great extension to previous albums and for the individual can be cherry picked for personal enjoyment. Unfortunately the final mix/master doesn't bring clarity to his intended expression considering the bar set for him... however its not doomed. If you choose to clear the smoke and take it for what it is, ... read more

Caribou - Swim
69

Conditioned under some harsh faults, the whimsical and colorful score could only take me so far before a dated squished mix kept competing synth leads and vocals in the dark... nonetheless it still has a threshold of character and soul. The risky combination between progressive moments finding a way to reinvent itself while sticking to a diverse fusion of genre bending sounds, creates an unplanned foggy impact that may deter some listeners.

I. JORDAN - Watch Out!
65

A lacklustre product of past ideas stamped into modern rave culture. Its far from bad, but its forgettable nature struggles to stand tall. The empty spaces between comfortable compositions has created a want for more musical elements. Feierabend being the most ambitious track, has managed to buy itself enough interest.

Autechre - Tri Repetae
88

Nostalgic electronically inducing IDM that's light years beyond a conventional experience. Its structural response is hypnotically paced with no obvious division between the next idea. Instead it is filled with ambient pockets that unite the space into one transcendental vision.

Faten Kanaan - Afterpoem
78

A combination of fruitful ideas that swim amongst delicate progressions and soft tones, married with orchestral moments. From start to finish It feels more as a collection of non-sequential poetic reason and less as a broader interpretive story. There's a strong connection between the artists intentions and the final result, which presents a luscious personal take that can invite deep interest for individuals who seek that.

Blawan - Dismantled Into Juice
82

Unapologetic exploration in a really interesting way. There's an analogue presence that has spawned a very chaotic and tamed production. It will twist your arm until you've heard it all and by the end you'll contemplate whether its better then good or a personal masterpiece.

Sofia Kourtesis - Madres
83

Sofia has a very elegant and polished european influence over a groovy house production. Theres just the right amount of variation in the drums and sound design where it doesn't fall flat. This one definitely wants to get your hips moving and arms waving up in the sky. Its an appealing listen, as it just breaks out of the washed up house format. A breath of fresh air under the sun for her listeners.

Jon Hopkins - Immunity
94

Full of texture and atmosphere... so much that it fills the three dimensional soundscape in a palatable yet unpredictable manner. Its a dynamic journey with a strong start and an equally strong follow up. It will take you places you didn't prepare to go but you'll end up happy to be there. Additionally the original master is timeless and holds up stylistically to the remastered 2023 version.
