Stratospheric highs with some astonishingly mediocre mids in between. Jack Antonoff will pay for his crimes against humanity.

Kate Hudson - Glorious

Man I've been fuming at the Kate Hudson album. Honestly it's not horrible musically. Everything is just... ok. I don't think I'd re-listen to any song, but if I heard it on at Kohl's and had no idea who it was, I just wouldn't feel any sort of way. Which honestly I think might be worse than music being objectively bad. The whole point of any art form is to make someone feel something. Great music, regardless of genre or energy level, does that. But what irks me the MOST is that Kate Hudson is ... read more

Childish Gambino - Atavista
89

Childish Gambino released this album’s initial form in 2020: ‘03.15.20’ to be exact, as the title goes. It was chaotic, messy, and unpolished in the best possible way. Normally a detractor for long-awaited albums, this felt like an intentional mirroring of the world in March of 2020. The spread of COVID-19 ushered in an unpredictable and turbulent time for people across the globe. At a point when life itself felt unsettling, the unevenness of ‘03.15.20’ made ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - Not Like Us

No matter how many times I remind myself that Kendrick dropped 4 unbelievably brutal and detailed diss tracks in less than a week, my little brain can’t actually comprehend it. It feels like when you say a word too many times and it stops sounding like a word. Someday when rap beefs and their importance to hip-hop’s identity and history are discussed in music history courses, I feel like this beef (mainly Kendrick’s contribution) will be one of the prime examples that’s ... read more

Maggie Rogers - Don't Forget Me
88

Maggie Roger was thrown into an impossibly difficult position to start her career when Pharrell gushed over her demo of 'Alaska' in college. Her jump in name recognization and musical expectations sky-rocketed past where she was, growth-wise. I think her first album 'Past Lives' encapsulated that. It was a really fun album with some real gems, but felt over-produced at times and didn't always seem to match the energy that Rogers was putting out with her songwriting and vocals.

I thought ... read more
