Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
76
What a bizarre, but entrancing album from one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. Quite an odd listen since Syd Barrett just riffs on what is on his mind at the time. I understand he went mad due to his overuse of psychedelic drugs, so I'd imagine that also plays a role in how he makes his brand of music. Kind of creepy at times how bare bones the instrumentation is and how Barrett's vocals trail off key on occasion. No question he left his mark on music culture for his authenticity and ... read more
James Taylor - Sweet Baby James
70
I love it when James Taylor belts out some bluesy tunes, rather than the overly sweet-sounding folk. "Fire and Rain" is a timeless classic. This is an inoffensive album with some pleasant folk and blues songs that will at the least, act as nice background noise.
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

Man, this is some of the smoothest jazz beats I've ever heard. "The Low End Theory" has A Tribe Called Quest give us a presentation of aesthetic and buttery-smooth hip-hop. Also, pretty cool to hear Busta Rhymes when he was early on in his career. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg are for sure the strongest artists on this project. They play off of each other so well. Definitely a phenomenal album.
Nas - Illmatic

A collection of insanely catchy and lyrical hip-hop tracks with jazz influence. Nas is at his strongest artistically, paining a metaphorical picture of his upbringing in New York City in the 80s. No wonder this album is considered to be one of the best hip-hop albums ever. Can't name a favorite track because they all are great tracks. If you are a fan of some great 90s rap, give this a listen.
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
83
Flying Lotus is an amazing producer. The experimental nature of most of his works is at his best on this menagerie of hip-hop, jazz, and electronic. The songs are plentiful, but short in length, but they are crazy and bombastic in the best possible way. No wonder why he receives work making music for other projects.
