Ambedo - I Am Now Where I Was

🗓️ JAN 🗓️
it's ok ig? I have a stereotype of post-rock that the entire genre is basically languid lo-fi strumming and beating of the same motif extended for 10+ minutes with weird band names and track titles, so having this stereotype broken by this release was a pleasant surprise, especially since the first track is strong.
it kinda fell off after that tho. i think I understand what entropy was going for, but the execution didn't quite cut it (i won't be able to articulate how exactly but the track didn't leave much impression on me unfortunately).
the third track just exists. it passed in one ear out the other w/o much trace, tho tbh I didn't focus on it that much.
i might relisten to this project to develop a more in-depth opinion on this but odds aren't that high.

🗓️ FEB 🗓️
the concept behind this album - a clockmaker at the end of his life developing a connection to his house, and the sort of exploration of sin that structures get stained with whenever tragedies happen within their walls and that they have to bear for the rest of their existence - is actually very interesting, I think the sound and the mood of the album reflect the concept well. the harsh mechanical creaking accompanied by humming drones evoke imagery of an abandoned dilapidated structure talking to it's explorer, kinda beaming sounds and suggestions directly into their ears and mind. it's unnerving but very evocative.
for me tho, this project is a one-listen album - you listen to it once and then don't return to it ever. It's not an issue with the album itself (tho a 20-minuter and an 11-minuter are definitely not helping), it's just the attitude I have towards music like this.

Julianna Barwick - Tragic Magic

honestly this is really pretty and that's about it. kinda cosmic, nocturnal, kinda pastoral? etc. nice and pretty, a bit epic as well. this feels kinda like nailah hunter's lovegaze but with greater replay value because of some familiar melodies/good recurring melodies/sound design. I like it, bonus points for not being region blocked on youtube so I don't have to use a VPN to listen to this.

this shit is actually not listenable.
jk it is. but it's difficult. the production is abrasive and definitely very unusual and unique, but outside of that (and maybe? it's punk-ish attitude) this album has no merits. the songs meander and constant switches feel less like calculated and effective progressions and more like unconnected ideas clumsily stitched together just to create a ready-ish product. the songs also feel structureless, either because of the previous point or because there's too much shit going on and none of it connects. the abrasiveness of the sound quickly overstimulates and gets tiring, which makes the songs fall to the background (that obviously doesn't help the messages in the lyrics and it also doesn't help the memorability and the replay value of the album). and it's not even good kind of background, it's the kinda shit I'd immediately turn off. also the energy in this is close to nonexistent imo.
I don't like this.

at least the cover's nice
someone said 1:43 onwards is really nice. kinda sounds like something opn would make, I fw that heavy.
wh *beep* t is h *beep* en *beep* nin *beep* o *beep* kora and why is there so much swearing? also the minimalist techno 2:11 till the end is actually very interesting. the song is still shit but at least the production is interesting.

Knocked Loose - Hive Mind
75
//> SINGLE
actually really good. the little trap beat segment at the beginning of the track tilted me a bit, but I don't mind it tbh. there's a trap beat at the end too which isn't bad at all.
most of the track is standard metal instrumentation, which is good. I was afraid KL went pop metalcore and added a really spoopy and dramatic trap beat, but first it's not spoopy at all (it's really barebones actually), and two it's used very sparingly.
denzel delivered on his part. he's always really intense and aggressive, his energy and style matched perfectly with metal beat like that imo. I'm actually curious how he'd sound on a fully metal album.
this is really good.

Renatto Olivares - Aguas Raras
60
I like the sound of Spanish language and I plan on learning it someday, but I just wish this guy would sing more and talk less.
also where are melodies? where is structure? shit is just happening and there's no tangible structure to anything, just one thing after another and sometimes these things overlap and compound into a third, fourth, Nth intangible thing.
3 tracks in and it became listenable...........
idk this feels adjacent to in my opinion the worst kind of prog.rock - zeuhl. it's all incredibly spastic, tense, wacky and epic, and also completely intangible. imo it's like rage, but if you can mosh to rage, and in some cases rage is actually really cool, then you can't do shit to zeuhl except imagine things, "appreciate music theory" 🙄 or sit there awkwardly and take it/cringe.
solace (⭐), del monte, trabajo del tiempo (??)

femtanyl - MAN BITES DOG
60
I don't like femtanyl. not in my taste anymore.
half the tracks on this album devolve into a noisy mess. unlike noisy messes on some other albums, this one has structure, so that's nice since there's something to latch on to and there's potential in more tracks being appreciated on relistens (which I won't be doing).
I think there's some experimentation going on here as well, especially with tracks like body the pistol and shows you the way to hiway - these tracks feature more rock-adjacent instrumentation compared to femtanyl's on-brand digital hardcore. I don't remember if reactor has rock/punk elements in it, IMO in here they're more pronounced.
basically when shit bangs it bangs, when it tries to bang it tries hard, fails and becomes noise.
body the pistol (⭐), sick of it, head up (⭐), man bites dog (??)

Blanket - True Blue

when I first saw this album's page I thought the genre was blackgaze. now it says shoegaze, altrock, etc. tho tbh it doesn't matter what the genre is, it wouldn't change the fact that this is boring and milquetoast. run-of-the-mill, pleasant shoegaze with weak choruses and verses and that's about it.
hole in my head (⭐)

Lantlôs - Daisies
80
//> SINGLE
my first lantlôs song and a really good one at that. i like the echoey reverby guitar licks throughout the track and the breakdown section at the last minute of the track. I also really like how sunny and summery the track is, I'm just a fan of this kind of sunny metal in general, the contrast of gritty and intense instrumentation with the lightness and brightness of the composition is really fun and pretty life-affirming.

Peaches - No Lube So Rude
0
right off the bat there's no charisma in the raunchiness, so the sexual lyrics sound awkward and stupid.
something about the production and the sound of the album gives off this feeling of amateurism I guess? like this feels like something that would be included in "Instagram music is bad" compilation along with dax, ebin orchestral yt boy rap and the I am rectangular guy. the vocals and the composition feel separate from one another, the vocal delivery is flat and clunky, the choruses are basically just a phrase being repeated ad nauseam...
also the music videos are actually disgusting. I understand that raunchiness and abrasiveness are her brand but I just don't care about any of this.
some instrumentals are cool tho.

Gorillaz - The Mountain

🗓️ MAR 🗓️
the moon cave is kinda disney-esque? not in a bad way. it kinda feels like the blend of golden age cartoons with musical sensibilities of modern didney but it's not obnoxious thankfully.
happy dictator and god of lying are incredibly boring. THD lacks choruses I guess? it just felt like a sequence of verses and nothing much. idk I don't even remember the song anymore. I like the image of spinning the globe on a finger though. GoL is just straight up boring. I can't remember a single thing about the song except there being a different br*ish guy singing.
I kinda dreaded the manifesto because I felt like it would be this album's standard psych slog stretched out to 7 mins, but I was very much proven wrong. it's kinda a medley with 2-3 parts with really good rapping and very fun beats. 👍
plastic guru has good choruses. the verses just disappear idk y.
delirium is strange. it's funky and memorable, but the vocals on choruses can be a real turnoff from the song. though tbh they're ~70% the reason why the song is memorable in the first place. I'm not put off from the vocals, I hear this style often in progrock, so I'm kinda used to it.
damascus fucks, I do wish there were more Arabic vocals though, and the beat can be a bit too much in a goofy way. the song fucks tremendously tho.
idk this album is a mixed bag for me. on one hand there are a lot of really good & catchy songs, on the other there's a lot of slog that's tough to get thru. what I can say 4 sure is that slog or banger, they're all very atmospheric and rich in detail and feeling. even the most boring tracks here are brimming w/ emotion and ambience, and honestly it makes sense considering this album is about death, loss & reincarnation. I'm not sure if I'm gonna come back to this (probs not).

Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds - Mutiny After Midnight
55
right off the bat I already don't like what I'm hearing. the 1st track's boring, nothing is catching my ear and the track barely holds my attention, the lyrics are bad, the second verse specifically soured the song further imo. the 2nd and 3rd tracks are completely functional songs and thus are inoffensive, they're just there.
"stay on that d, baby till you hit that g" mmmm I beat it up like staccato smooth strokes legato she like it when I use vibrato
viridescent's outro is good, the rest of the song is pure mid. not bad, not good.
outro of situation is also good, the song is alright. it actually has something going on, but I'm not articulate enough to pinpoint what that is. IMO the catchiness comes from the sharp two? note lick throughout the track.
everyone is welcome has something catchy going on but I'm still on the fence about it. I feel like there isn't enough to bite into ig idk, it doesn't inspire me to return to it.
idk the album is fine I suppose. the musicianship is obviously good (or at the very least functional), and the songs are actually songs and not whatever the fuck URGH has as it's music, but overall I'm left unimpressed. the songs fly into one ear out the other, some lyrics are bad (not offensively bad, just not good), it's just meh. the album cover is great though, I love this style.
situation, venus (⭐), everyone is welcome (??)

BLACKPINK - DEADLINE
50
//> EP
jump and go are the only 2 tracks worth a listen tbh. they constitute the best material from this ep even if they're still mid on their own.
me and my is a generic girlboss trap song. i don't see any merit to it outside of being a purely functional song.
I actually kinda like champion. it's a vapid pseudo-motivational anthemic thing, but it's good a sweet vocal melody on choruses which kinda redeems the track for me. I have a soft spot for sugary music like this. btw it's a song produced by dr.luke (or wukash gottwald, funny name), that must've contributed to the red ratings.
fxxxboy is plain shit. there's so little merit to that song I can't be bothered to even start talking about it. it's just shit, it's also produced by dr.luke. make of that what you will.

IVE - REVIVE+

there's a sense of experimentation going on in the first half I suppose, like there's a blend of genres and adjacency to hyperpop soundwise (Sophie stuff) (blackhole and bang bang especially).

a lot of really nice bangers. hush and hot coffee are especially good.

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe
70
//> MIXTAPE
tia's and zel's verses on the scythe are good, ferg is just there. the beat is good, chorus is memorable.
lit effect is kinda weird. I'm probably not reading this right, I understand it's like an attempt to distinguish yourself from ppl on the internet who talk the talk but can't walk the walk, but on the other hand they take up so much real estate in your mind you dedicate an entire song to call them out??? strange, but the song slaps so it's ok. beat is great, rapping is also really good by pretty much everyone on the track.
phony is ok. the beat is kinda run-of-the-mill and boring, the rapping is serviceable. not much to say.
mutt that bih is really good. I love the beat, especially the choral elements.
hoopty is fun. that's pretty much it. great beat, serviceable rapping.
you ain't gotta lie is white girl music. that isn't bad in the slightest. eh it's fine ig. idk what to say about this song.
tan is also eh. I like the beat, it's pretty, ethereal and kinda vernal. the rapping is fine ig, but I personally could do without it. the beat carries.
i like the huhs in up. rich the kid is pejoratively mid as always, I don't see any reasons for him to be here at all when ferg would do his verse much better imo.
I'm not sure i'd return to this project. mutt that bih and lit effect are definitive best out of this, they're worth pulling out from this album. the rest ranges from serviceable 1-time listen to potentially entering frequent rotation.
the scythe, lit effect (⭐), mutt that bih (⭐), hoopty, tan (??),

By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
75
this is quintessential yt ppl rap (audience demographics wise) - very artsy and experimental, very lyrical and emotional with a variety of unusual topics and themes explored in songs. it's also absolutely non-kinetic (one'd look stupid trying to dance to this) and is listenable either only by die-hard fans or on special occasions/specific moods.
I like how spacious this record is. 00
I like the themes in grapefruit. how an artist's personal life and intimate details become a commodity taken for granted, compared to just a fruit to open up and bite into.
the way the beat changes on best interest with billy's part comes in is really cool. it becomes spacey, echoey and psychedelic while having a sorta industrial tinge to it. I really liked that.
can I have you for myself?, dead weight (⭐), in my town, double trio 2 (⭐)

Hen Ogledd - DISCOMBOBULATED
50
off-topic: this website sucks.
on topic: this album sucks too.
the instrumentation is great when it's subdued and the psychedelic sound of the album is fine it's just everything else is shit. there's these goofy poorly mixed vocals on scales will fall and dead in a post-truth world (what a title 🙄) that completely annihilate the songs, the vocals especially suck on clara. plus these spoken word inclusions just 😬😬😬 I hate this so much it's ear-grating. plus there's literally everything everywhere all at once happening on these tracks instrumentally and it completely blurs any semblance of structure in music just............
also hearing these lyrics frankly makes me not want to understand english language anymore.
there's 20-minuter in this album. if it sucks then 😐
what also sucks is that the choruses are good here, especially on scales will fall and end of the rhythm. the problem with that is that unlike imagie dragies' enemy, where you *can* theoretically endure dan reynolds to get to jid's part, in here it's not worth it because while the choruses are good, they're not good enough to endure badly sung slog before and after.
it's great that wales and welsh culture & language are getting represented, and I also don't claim knowledge of hen ogledd's intent with this album, but it seems to me that in desire to represent wales they forgot to make actually good music.
also "bard rap"..... I'm good off that.

i really didn't listen to the last song of this album lol
if this is what the smiths are like then I'm kinda looking forward to getting into their discography. this sounds really fun and light while having rlly sad lyrics and shit idk.
normally I wouldn't be a fan of this kind of singing but I don't mind it in here. I'm unsure why, maybe because the vocal gravitas (wtf does that mean) is matched by the instrumentals or maybe because the singing itself isn't grating. maybe because there's little theatrality in this (even tho there is actually a lot of it). idk I don't mind the vocals.

largely unimpressive. the chorus is nice, everything in between is just okay I suppose.
this song tries really hard to be grand and cinematic with these orchestral arrangements but instead of it having any kind of gravitas like in their 70's output it just feels disney-esque and toothless. I won't be able to articulate why it feels like that.
I suppose it's good enough. I've yet to complete my full dive into their discography, and I will listen to aurora (the album) once it releases, but if this is what their music sounds post 1994's talk then........

14.04.2026 - another thing that weirder me out about the song are the vocals. jon davison sounds too much like jon anderson, almost uncannily so. i won't be able to point out specifics of what makes the vocals weird.

this is very beautiful. this track would fit very well in tomorrow's harvest tracklist - it starts off ominous and ambient-ish, kinda like sundown, uritual and collapse, but when arps come in halfway into the track it becomes very beautiful and tragic. maybe that's gonna be Inferno's entire vibe - dark, ominous, tragic and beautiful. the track titles certainly point to that being the case.

off topic: this website sucks. it's barely holding itself together with some spit and a prayer, and now it's not even letting me in w/o a vpn I can't bro..........
on topic: this album is cool. it's definitely a victim of what I call geogaddi effect, where a good album with strong melodicism doesn't fully register and just kinda passes in one ear out the other and only materializes and clicks on future relistens. there are a lot of memorable melodies and motifs in this album, it's got great energy, it just doesn't click, and I'm not even sure if I'll relistens to this because bandcamp likes to be a bitch and limit number of listens on songs before putting a nag screen (and then not even playing the song after a couple nag screens). maybe it's on youtube idk
