gotta really wonder about a kid who puts a bare ass on the cover like she's mooning everyone and then writes a bunch of lyrics about partying and going on vacations in the middle of a pandemic. The sliver spoon, cul-de-sac arty kid is growin up and it ain't pretty, much like her self-indulgent goofy dancing she seems rather incapable of self-reflection, mostly interested in navel-gazing (this was absolutely true on Pure Heroine and Melodrama, as good as they were). I liked some of the songs on the first album despite coming away with the impression that the singer was a sociopath trying to affect having depression and I listened to about half of this and decided their main desire is to be popular and famous and thats about all. Pretty emblematic of their generation that they do what amounts to be a cover version of older people's culture while simultaneously giving us the finger. Boring, twee, an album made up of songs that seem deliberately crafted to be ... read more
what can you say about this album that hasnt already been said about the ecstasy of St. Teresa? oh I know: body talk made me gay. but seriously let's just break it down to one song out of a basket of excellent ones (and "cry when you get older" didnt even make the cut!!!) the fact that "call your girlfriend" is so perfectly worded as to leave it ambiguous whether it's from the perspective of the dumped or the mistress. only police era Sting was as good at multi layered sad ... read more
does anyone play this any more on the regular? I remember being impressed with kendrick at first but once that wore off I realized I never really wanted to go back to his songs and contemplating a full listen of this or butterfly is a non starter. hes insufferable, preachy, boring. fetishizing cellulite is still objectification, it's not woke lmao. he even drops stuff about being a black israelite on this joint. hes a reactionary who looks progressive by the standards of hip hop.
I actually like it even more than oceanic! but to me they are inseparable. hard to see metal getting any better than this.
