This album is absolutely amazing to me. The very first time I ever heard Census Designated, I went into it with no knowledge, expecting a hyperpop album. There are some very clear moments where this album lulls but overall, slimdan is a great vocalist and his voice works very well over these mostly simple and light instrumentals. The lyrics are sometimes slightly poetic, but a lot of times more confessional and I love that. I really just wish there was more to this project and that some of the poorer songs were cleaned up a bit, great otherwise.
I think this album is pretty much just the band evolving more, doing the same thing they've been doing but doing it even better. The lyrics are more powerful, the songs are given more room to breath which was pretty much my one problem with them before, and the passion is even more present here than in their past work. And the vocals are just as bad, I'm in love!!
I put this off for a long long time, and I'm really sad I did because there is a lot of good shit on here. The lyrics are very poignant and the instrumentals are all lively and very interesting. I absolutely love horrible vocalists and this is one of the worst.
The most downright depressing Mitski album, it's slow and heartfelt, but it never really reaches out into the anger every previous album seems to capture at least a few times throughout.
