AJR - The Maybe Man

It fine ig

It's alright. While I personally prefer OK ORCHESTRA, The Maybe Man is certainly a decent album. Now while I've grown out of AJR I still do return to some of their songs and one album. The Maybe Man might not be an album I'll return to, but some of the songs will most likely be added to my playlist.

Right, so, this is supposedly their "mature" album where they focus more on the music. And it's... fine. The instrumentations are nice, the brothers ... read more

Peak

This is where I get serious. Because this was my first real introduction to AJR, and during that time I was going through the worst month of my life. I'm not going to say AJR saved my life, because they did not, but they certainly helped me through the year. This album has a special place in my heart.

Right, sound? A big step up from Neotheater. Stripping back a bit more of the sound of Neotheater, OK ORCHESTRA is a much more focused and compelling album with a well defined sound. ... read more

epic

Now we're getting good. I like this album, quite a bit. Continuing from The Living Room (mid) and The Click (ass), Neotheater is a decent album. The boys finally got better from the flu and can sing now, they made it less loud, and they got back their infectious hooks.

Like before I'm focusing on the sonic contents of the album. So? It's good! At least the first half is. They striped back the production and made it less annoying, the instrumentals are very bouncy, the ... read more

Now this, this is truly ass

Hey, remember when I said that The Living Room isn't AJR's worst album? Yeah, that's because The Click exist.

Why you may ask? Well, I can forgive The Living Room because at the end of the day they were just trying to have fun. I don't think the living room was supposed to be a very serious album.

The Click though... I'm pretty sure they thought they were cooking something here. Like they were trying to be serious and sing about serious ... read more

I like AJR #Notsorry

With that being said though, this album isn't great. Right so, The Living Room. Something you should know before hand is that I have quite the tolerance when it comes to "bad" music and that I'm a sound guy first and lyric guy second (with a few exceptions). So that's what I'm going to focus on. How does the album sound?

Half-decent AJR has a knack for making (to me) nice melodies. The opener, Overture, is decent if not a little long. ... read more

camiidae - music for bugs

Hmm... How peculiarly whimsical

Played Bug Fables with this on. Great time. Anyways, Music for Bugs is a collection of songs made for... bugs!

Much like Bug Music: Music of the Raymond Scott Quintette, John Kirby & His Orchestra, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Music for Bugs is dainty, sweet, and full of whimsy. But unlike Bug Music, Music for Bugs is whimsical in the fantastical sense, akin to that of a nature documentary who's objective is teach kids the beauty of nature and the ... read more

Johnny Foreigner - Waited Up 'Til It Was Light

My balls have exploded

This album is the shit. British hyperactive schizo indie twee emo-pop band Johnny Foreigner and their debut album Waited Up 'Til It Was Light - much like Mars Accelerator's Clouds For Your Y-Axis - caught my attention due to the many genre tags it has, and oh boy it did not disappoint.

A sweet record that just has enough rough edges to not make my toothache. Spread with passionate vocals, manic screaming, catchy hooks and melodies, and dueting girl/boy vocals ... read more

Eh at best and boring at worst

I've heard a lot of bad things about this album. And I can't say I understand it. The hate for it. It's just bleh. Bland. Dull. Unimaginative. Just google every synonym for boring and you have this album.

It's plastic pop music. Something that radios put on because rock is dead (on the pop radio). I honestly don't have anything to say. It's sleep inducing. In ... read more

Huh

How did I in my musical journey end up in Russian satirical comedy rap? How the fuck should I know.

One thing I do know however is that this album slaps so fucking hard. If it's not obvious I don't speak Russian. So whether or not any commentary in this album is relevant or funny is lost on me. All I know is that there isn't enough homosexuality. And honestly. Same.

What I do know however is that the ... read more

Creative Title!

While BTMI! previous album may be the more interesting one, I like this more due to the fact it's more consistent.

It's a straightforward album, it's melodies are safe, tracks feel more coherent, it's structured. But of course the fun factor hasn't been removed.

BTMI! slam their instruments and they are having a blast. Passionate and an absolutely fun time. Jeff, as always, ... read more

TWINKS BE TWINKING

Will/did all of these jokes and references become outdated the immediate next month this album came out? Yes. Does that matter? No. Is the music any good? Yes. (sorta).

So let's start. This album is hella catchy. It's definitely got a strange energy to it. Same with the singing. It's got range. Loud, emotional range.

Bombastic and loud, Doin' Fine does a great job with the ... read more

The Spotify shuffle brings me to weird places

It's is a real shame that this Mars Accelerator didn't really blow up. I think they had something going on here.

This album is good. Real good. Not exactly peak early 2000's indie rock (imo), but it's certainly a decent good great example.

It's dreamy and dense. The sounds on here are just beautiful. They've got that floating on air sound down ... read more

Greased up white boy breaking it down sexual style

Right, I like this album. I think. I'm pretty sure I do. Yeah.

It's weird, catchy, danceable. No sex jams unfortunately. None of these songs would fit in a strip club.

Honestly I'm having trouble writing reviews for albums like this. I mean, I DO like it. It's just that other than the usual talking points (Hooky hooks, undeniably danceable sounds, catchy choruses, very fun, and the fact that he does in fact have a ... read more

My heart

So yeah. Love. Funny thing that is. One moment you got a crush, maybe talk to said crush, maybe hit it off and start dating.

But not all love is poised to last forever. Maybe something just doesn't work out, whether it be long distance or maybe just the realization that you weren't meant for each other.

And that is the concept for The Unlovables debut LP, Crush - Boyfriend - Heartbreak.

This here. ... read more

Mmm...

Rain.

I'd like to consider myself an enjoyer of electronic music. I like me some wobbly beats.

At least, that's what I thought. See, my introduction to electronic was in the 2010's with you dubstep and breakcore and what not. Fast thumping beats that could give you a headache.

But it was only two year ago that I decided to really dig deep into the genres that I like. Recommendations and high rated ... read more

Very strange.

Pretty good.

I found World's End Fruit Basket randomly when Spotify (I refuse to buy premium) decided to put on Celeb Hunter when I was trying to listen to Sunny Day. Can't say I wasn't interested immediately.

Let's talk about the beginning of the album. Chaotic, noisy, angry. It is intense and groovy. I really like the broken-ish english mixed in with the Japanese.

Arguably Limp Bizkit's best album

It's not good or anything. It's still Limp Bizkit. But it isn't THAT bad.

Limp Bizkit gets a lot of hate, and for good reason, but like. This is fun. Turn your brain off and start pretending you're an angry white teen again.

Still though, it is Limp Bizkit. It sounds like crap. Like sometimes it's that good kind of crap, where it adds to the fun of flailing ... read more

Spanish Love Songs - Schmaltz

[Note that this review was originally written on RYM on June 20, 2024]

It scratches an itch

Self introspection is a strange thing.

The thing that I've always kinda hated about emo (at least newer emo) is that it really lacks self awareness.

While future Spanish Love Songs albums would focus on more societal problem, Schmaltz is very focused on the self.

Sound wise it's nothing to write home about. Your typical pop punk sound. But that's not really a fault. Because it does it ... read more

Where was this when I needed it?

Growing up and moving out and then having to move back in is hard. And this album knows it. While I didn't personally connect with Goodbye Cool World, I do connect with this one.

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. Like the albums that came before it, this one is a blast. Energetic, memorable, and tight. The production here has improved greatly.

There are more hooks and ... read more

It really depends on mood

This is either a really good album or a really annoying one depending on how you feel.

Personally, I like it. Kinda. BTMI! Starts of where TASOB left off. Angry, aggressive and very messy. At least this album is. But that doesn't stop it from being catchy as all hell.

King of Minneapolis Pts. 1 & 2 is a great example of this. The first few minutes are catchy as hell and the rest will ... read more
