I’ve always been a big fan of Paaks voice. I liked his collab with Bruno Mars, “An Evening With Silk Sonic” but never got around to checking out his other work. Very well put together feature list with; K.Dot, Dr Dre, J. Cole, Pusha T, Q-tip, and many other great artists. Paak seamlessly blends elements of funk, jazz, soul, hip-hop,and R&B. He has a very unique ability to infuse genres while maintaining a well put together project. With Dre’s influence and executive production this album is also very polished. Beyond the grooviness and melodies this is a pretty dense album lyrically. This album is named after Paaks hometown, Oxnard, which he dives into many themes such as: complexities of fame, political views, and broader social issues. One of my favorite things about Paak is his ability to switch between rapping and singing so smoothly. Another thing that separates Paak from others is his charisma, it shines through on most of these tracks I’d even compare it to how Ludacris’ charisma shines through on his music. This album is also emotionally resonant. He is one of the most innovative and creative artists of his time and I’d love to hear some more of his work.
