Going into this as my first Daniel Caesar album I didn’t have much to base my expectations on but it didn’t take me long to understand the vibe he was going for. The beginning is really slow and atmospheric, almost as if he’s easing you into the album instead of trying to grab you right away.
As the album progresses, the pacing improves. “Call on Me” and “Baby Blue” bring more energy, and that’s when the album started to click with me. From there, ... read more
I came into this album not knowing what to expect but I still had higher expectations because he just dropped one of his best projects the year prior. I’ve always felt Drake is at his best when he balances rapping and melody but he can fall into stretches where it seems repetitive or dragged out.
Even with that, one of the biggest strengths Drake showcases on this album is his sonic consistency. For the most part he sticks to a specific atmosphere, which creates a moody, late at night ... read more
This album is widely regarded as Lana’s best album. From what I’ve heard I agree with this. She is a great singer/songwriter. Her voice has always appealed to me even if I didn’t enjoy the rest of the song. Lana covers topics of disillusionment, love, and loss all throughout this album. The production is great all around and it compliments Lana’s vocals well. She effortlessly lays her vocals and changes tones, her vocal range is impressive.
I feel like I can hear ... read more
Die Lit is a standout album in modern day hip-hop. This was a pretty unique record that created a huge wave of influence. The simplistic trap beats with Carti’s very repetitive lyrics work well with each other. This is definitely party music and I feel like I’d enjoy this album much more while at one.
One of the things that doesn’t appeal to me is the lack of complexity and lyricism. I prefer lyric heavy albums but Carti did great at capturing a certain mood. This album is ... read more
This album blends neo-soul, funk, hip-hop, and jazz very well. I’d describe the instrumentals as very lush and unique. This album has a very organic sound to it. This is a very well written album with D’Angelo touching topics of black identity and love. His voice also compliments the beats very well; it sounds as if he is harmonizing with the instruments at times. This is truly a groundbreaking album heavily inspired by classic jazz records.
Although this music is really well ... read more
The length of this album is the most devaluing part of this. An hour and 20 minutes could’ve been cut to a 50 minute length album. Although I enjoy every song on this album except confessions pt.2 Remix there are definitely some obviously weaker tracks. If 5-7 tracks were cut this album would be much more powerful. The production on this album is amazing from known producers such as: Just Blaze,Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon, and more. Usher’s vocals on this album immediately caught my ... read more
JPEG continues to push boundaries in hip-hop with this album, fusing punk, rock, rap, making this a very chaotic yet cohesive record. On this album he shows off his ability to merge abrasive glitchy production with raw lyrics well. He covers many topics on this album, such as: politics, his identity, and the music industry as a whole. Some tracks I feel he shows some of his most innovative skills on are, “vulgar display of power” and “exmilitary”. The song “either on ... read more
This is a well put together album that showcases Billie’s uniqueness and her artistic vision. She blends some genres, such as: pop, indie and electronic. I feel this album creates an atmospheric listening experience. Billie’s vocals and dark introspective lyrics make this a very emotionally deep album. She had an impressive hit with “Bad Guy” although It’s one of my least favorites from this album she made an unconventional yet catchy hit, pushing boundaries for ... read more
I’ve always been a big fan of Paaks voice. I liked his collab with Bruno Mars, “An Evening With Silk Sonic” but never got around to checking out his other work. Very well put together feature list with; K.Dot, Dr Dre, J. Cole, Pusha T, Q-tip, and many other great artists. Paak seamlessly blends elements of funk, jazz, soul, hip-hop,and R&B. He has a very unique ability to infuse genres while maintaining a well put together project. With Dre’s influence and executive ... read more
This album is so fucking groovy.
I grew up being told that Prince was supposed to be one of the best pop stars like Michael Jackson.I would laugh in your face if you told me this before hearing this album. I’ve heard “Controversy” and was convinced MJ was leagues ahead of Prince. This album is what changed it for me. Prince shows his ability of blending a diverse range of genres in a very innovative way. Although this album keeps a similar theme sonically each track has ... read more
