Winnower is the first full length project I've heard from Hikes, and I'll say without a doubt that i must experience their other work outside of the one single I was familiar with. To go from the soothing tones of that single 'Beauty again' to this mesmerising and complex construction of an album was surprising but not all at jarring.
The soul of Hikes is ever present, on display at all times, seeping through every phrase and composition. A truly vibrant, deep and lively ... read more
This album feels like it was made for me. Energetic, intricate and twinkly guitars, groovy bass which is really given room to breathe, incredibly emotional delivery (mmm screams)... The list goes on, and as I write this whilst listening to it for a second time I can feel the final score creeping up ever so slowly.
All of this is tied up in a neat half an hour package so that it never outstays its welcome whilst remaining fresh, diving between groovy jams, emotionally heavy guitar and more ... read more
People Watching is equal parts angry and haunting with thumping chugs, eerie synths, occasional spoken word and dark lyricism. I know i should enjoy this album. I so desperately want to enjoy this album.
Unfortunately... My overall disillusionment with a lot of the core traits and tenets of modern metalcore means i simply found myself finding tracks tedious after some time as well as the drum and guitar tone just downright.. boring? With some quite stale production to boot. This specific ... read more
This album certainly lives up to its name. An electric blend of hardcore, punk and metalcore culminate in something that is core-shaking and compels you to simply move. Technically, the album isn't complex in the slightest, with decently simple instrumentation. The guitar tone, in all its bone-crushing glory, doesn't call for anything intricate anyway. It truly has some sublime moments that I can't help but imagine would be absolutely incredible live. Sadly, Bluntnose can get a ... read more
Intricate, bittersweet and deeply introspective. Twin Galaxies stands in delta sleep's discography as somewhat of an anomoly; no other full length release has captured the angst that is on full display here. That is not to say the album feels immature by any means, merely a product of an earlier time in the life of the band and it's members. The screams in tracks like uncle ivan and the incredibly abrasive guitar in 21 letters have simply never been revisited, left to exist as a time ... read more
post-hardcore through and through. Whilst not the most original album or sound in the world, staining the twilight Black's first and only effort so far still manages to be creative and fun, and pack an almost tearjerking gut punch of emotion at times. The stained vocals in the final track provoke such moments. Genuinely fantastic stuff, with infectious groove and gorgeous melody at points. Everything in the mix feels like it could do with just a little more meat, but this is sincerely an ... read more
decent tracks with some pretty fun parts. Really not a fan of the mixing on the whole, but it is serviceable. The third track has this kind of lethargic build up which, whilst it eventually hits, feels like it shouldve come a minute earlier. This little EP isnt too shabby but it doesnt feel like the instrumentals are all too creative.
this is the callous daoboys at their most energetic. Whilst celebrity therapist doesn't possess the same storytelling chops that their later release does, it packs insanely well rounded and tight parcels of mathcore in each track. Whilst not genre bending rollercoasters, the diversity in these tracks doesn't leave anything on the table. Celebrity Therapist is a mathcore revelation, yet suffers from a slight lack of cohesion, and not allowing a tremendous amount space to ... read more
A conceptual masterpiece that feels more like a carefully constructed screenplay than an album. Each track so seamlessly leads into the next, fitting into place perfectly despite how fundamentally different they all are. Whilst the individual tracks on their own may not have the same frenetic energy that was felt on celebrity therapist, they are greater than their sum. This album is truly a once in a lifetime experience and evokes so many emotions within me that i shan't say anything more ... read more
The raw, intricate and deeply emotional debut release from honestly my favourite math rock band right now Stereosity is a complete journey. From simply enchanting guitar to huge synthy sounds, each track is perfectly complimented by the vocals of Sam Krones to conjure a smorgasbord of differing emotions.
Whilst rough around the edges, Vast Lands perfectly demonstrates the soul and raw potential of Stereosity, which is then refined in their debut album New Life Will Grow. A true treat.
Until the 5th track, I wasn't completely on board with this album: the long droned vocals with reverb up to 11 aren't really my cup of tea and it never felt remarkable in any way. This is not to say there wasn't immense merit in some of the intricate time signature changes and fun passages that largely keep you guessing, it just felt like there was nothing special for me here. This perception changed with track 5 - the rollercoaster it straps you in for is exhilarating and ... read more
Possibly my favorite EP ever written. From the opening desperate screams of "forever means nothing to me" in more weight, to the piercing, shrill screams of 604 which send shivers down your spine. The band encapsulates the introspection, angst and desperation of what emo truly is. Undoubtedly one of the best vocal performances in the genre, which leave the short 10 minute experience lingering endlessly. It's impossible to not sit back and pay respect to this masterpiece after the ... read more
I can't stress how formative this record was to my music taste as a kid. The mixing gets heavily criticized by others but the muddiness is part of the charm. INK's tendency to stray into uber-clean mixing and production in their (frankly soulless) later works makes this stand out as an incredibly fun project in a sterile discography. The burning DRIPS with youthful energy, and is written far more experimentally you'd expect. Soul. How I miss INK with soul.
Also, this version of ... read more
A true journey. New Life Will Grow is stunning in every way: compositionally beautiful, twinkly riffs, enchanting vocals and such groovy bass.
This album holds such an immensely special place in my heart.
