Hikes - Winnower

Winnower is the first full length project I've heard from Hikes, and I'll say without a doubt that i must experience their other work outside of the one single I was familiar with. To go from the soothing tones of that single 'Beauty again' to this mesmerising and complex construction of an album was surprising but not all at jarring.

The soul of Hikes is ever present, on display at all times, seeping through every phrase and composition. A truly vibrant, deep and lively ... read more

This album feels like it was made for me. Energetic, intricate and twinkly guitars, groovy bass which is really given room to breathe, incredibly emotional delivery (mmm screams)... The list goes on, and as I write this whilst listening to it for a second time I can feel the final score creeping up ever so slowly.

All of this is tied up in a neat half an hour package so that it never outstays its welcome whilst remaining fresh, diving between groovy jams, emotionally heavy guitar and more ... read more

156/Silence - People Watching

People Watching is equal parts angry and haunting with thumping chugs, eerie synths, occasional spoken word and dark lyricism. I know i should enjoy this album. I so desperately want to enjoy this album.

Unfortunately... My overall disillusionment with a lot of the core traits and tenets of modern metalcore means i simply found myself finding tracks tedious after some time as well as the drum and guitar tone just downright.. boring? With some quite stale production to boot. This specific ... read more

Bluntnose - FRENZY

This album certainly lives up to its name. An electric blend of hardcore, punk and metalcore culminate in something that is core-shaking and compels you to simply move. Technically, the album isn't complex in the slightest, with decently simple instrumentation. The guitar tone, in all its bone-crushing glory, doesn't call for anything intricate anyway. It truly has some sublime moments that I can't help but imagine would be absolutely incredible live. Sadly, Bluntnose can get a ... read more

Delta Sleep - Twin Galaxies

Intricate, bittersweet and deeply introspective. Twin Galaxies stands in delta sleep's discography as somewhat of an anomoly; no other full length release has captured the angst that is on full display here. That is not to say the album feels immature by any means, merely a product of an earlier time in the life of the band and it's members. The screams in tracks like uncle ivan and the incredibly abrasive guitar in 21 letters have simply never been revisited, left to exist as a time ... read more
