JENNIE with her debut, Ruby fails to establish any unique sound. All of the r&b tracks here have been done better before (Kali Uchis), all of the pop rap songs have been done better (Doechii), and the one hyperpop-ish track - Like JENNIE - is basically lifted from Slayyyter's No Comma and GFOTY's Congrats. There's nothing here that feels uniquely JENNIE - no discernable style or sound that differentiates her from the rest of the pack.
The production does her no favors ... read more
While the original is almost a 10, this recording sterilizes the crap out of the guitar tone in a way that I largely do not enjoy
Never forgiving her for dropping this and immediately going back to releasing bad music....
"KiCk i" is difficult to evaluate because Arca seems just as invested in formulating an aesthetic here as she does in actually creating music (see: the album cover). It's clear compared to her previous albums (i.e., "Mutant" and "Xen") that the goal here is to be much more pop-forward. This isn't to say she hasn't put together pop-ish songs before (songs like "Vanity" followed a verse-chorus-verse structure to some extent) but Arca had ... read more
Absolutely insane to start your version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with a 2-minute avant-garde jazz break.
Highlights: “Icy Colors Change” - the title track is messy but it’s a solid hip house song
"Cruel Practice" is one of the most interesting projects to come out of the PC Music-adjacent sphere. It's sound is much darker; its feels much more hedonistic. The harsh, grimey beats are contrasted with Shygirl's monotone delivery, creating this soundscape that was wholly original.
There's something about the hyperpop-adjacent sphere that trends more towards nostalgia or idealism as a lyrical subject (i.e. Hannah Diamond, Charli XCX) that made Shygirl so interesting ... read more
How can anyone listen to Cruel Practice or ALIAS and think this even holds a candle to it. It's like Shygirl has become a parody of herself ever since Nymph. Shygirl's early music was boundary-pushing, clever, dark, and grimey. This is...I don't even know anymore.
It's so embarrassing, it's like Slut Pop all over again
the song doesnt really go anywhere, the production is so washed out as to make the anthemic nature of the chorus feel muted. and, let's be honest, she did this sound better on her debut
Reminds me a lot of Liturgy’s “The Ark Work” where I love so many of the individual pieces here but I can’t approve of how the pieces come together.
ISON is a perfect 35-40 minute album, but it’s extremely front loaded and pads its runtime with too much fluff.

C,XOXO was never as bad as people claimed it was. The first and last third of the record are incredibly solid, with the stretch between Dade County Dreaming and BOAT being...very not good (outside of DREAM-GIRLS).
There was a general commitment to an alternative/"hyperpop" aesthetic but there are some tracks that don't entirely fit, such as the acoustic "Twentysomethings" and the songs with Drake.
There are quite a few individual songs I enjoy here, but the current ... read more
Some of Kim’s best songs are on here (Icy / Personal Hell / Do Me) but there are plenty of duds too. If this ended with Meet the Parents” (I thought it was cute, sue me) this would easily be 10 pts higher for me.
Kim's magnum opus so far (besides the unreleased version of Problematique) that slightly falls under the weight of its long tracklist. The first half is banger after banger, with some of the interludes being as good as the main songs here (Bloody Valentine, Knives, TRANSylvania). Kim has always been at her best when her vocals take center stage, and the combination of her strong voice, fun lyrics, and spooky beats makes this album a fun experience.
The second half (technically TOTL Vol. ... read more
