Dave Free needs to be checked into a mental institution. This mf needs to be stopped. The most consistent behind the scenes creative.
I only have nice things to say. First of all, a music video with good acting? Insane.
The biggest props I have to give this video however is the choice to cut the song and slightly change the structure. This video would not work if they included the beat switch.
Also the parking spot dialogue is hilarious, it doesn't come off forced or cringe. And the ... read more
Why is he repping his own merch in some of these shots?
Anyway, Yeah this was the video where I realised Dave Free is a psychopath. These shots are so clean the video is one bad day away from being shutterstock core. But thankfully it's not.
revisiting it now, it's clear to see both Kendrick and Dave have evolved their taste and vision, but this video really feels like the foundation in which they now create visuals with. It's the blueprint.
Also that title card ... read more
Kendricks lil jig he does for 50% of the video is the best thing to happen since micheal jackson did the moonwalk at motown.
All jokes aside, this video introduced me to the world of layering visuals all the way back in 2021. Literally made me rethink video editing. The cinematography, set design and wardrobe, specifically in the kendrick dancing sections are lazered into my brain for the rest of time.
Most of my complaints are all nit-picks. Every scene has something that bugs me a little ... read more
Dave Free needs to run for president.
Seriously, this video is so visually striking. So many memorable shots. My personal favorite being the chairs getting struck out by a car, the framing of that shot is so clean. Adam Newport-Berra did an incredible job on the cinematography for the entire run time.
Also the shot of keem giving kendrick a kiss on the cheek is hilarious.
The 4:3 aspect ratio helps the "this shit hard" text graphics fit into the visuals more so it's a welcome ... read more
Young Director Ethan Eng tries to recapture the magic of the Glipse of Us Music video. And in many ways he does.
This video feels alot more "directed" and staged then Glimpse of Us which is it's only downside. As I think the hitchhicker plot is just as interesting as the group of degenerates commiting crime in LA.
The biggest issue with the video is the sniper section. It's so obviously staged and planned that it delegitimises the rest of the amazing raw looking footage. ... read more
The song and video are super short so there's not too much to say, but the idea of using a body double "clone" isn't original but it does fit Joji's style and brand really well. I also like when the 808's match up with the cheecks slappin that dudes head.
Unfortunately this video is not christian and goes against the lord's wishes.
FROM THE FIRST 5 SECONDS I KNEW THIS WAS DIRECTED BY BRTHR, WHY DID THEY LET THIS GUY BACK IN THE STUDIO. WHAT IS WITH THE SOUND DESIGN MADE FROM TIN CANS AND DEFAULT YOUTUBE SOUND EFFECTS. WHY DOES HE ONLY USE IMOVIE TRANSITIONS AND EFFECTS. WHY DOES THE SET DESIGN LOOK SO CRINGE. WHY DID HE PUT JOJI IN ANOTHER STUPID LOOKING MASK.
Don't get me wrong it's better then will he. but dude. is he a family friend? I don't get it. boot him from the lobby.
The stand out of this video is obviously the nightmare dream sequence of uncanny prosthetics.
It's a shame more wasn't done with them since this felt like it had a good amount of potential.
The biggest issue however is this song is just bad. I love yachty but his verse makes me want to chop my ears off.
The idea of a scientist hijacking the spaceship they helped create (for reasons I'm still confused about) is a funny concept.
The first half found footage style section is pretty weak, not too many memorable or interesting shots, you can tell they were trying to recapture the magic of YEAH RIGHT but just didn’t hit the mark. I think the set design is ok for the most part, but it’s the actual shot ideas and selection that drags this section down.
The 2nd half of the video ... read more
The infinity limo is a cool idea, but the set design budget hindered its effect. The old boy style hallway shots look horrible, the acting is bad throughout and the B shot of the cracked face is bland and boring.
The final scene where Joji reaches the end of the limo and cracks the screen is composed of some of the laziest VFX, rivaling the dreaded golden pyramid in WANTED U.
For such an electric joji song this video has 0 sauce. The best part of the whole thing is the end credit sequence ... read more
I'm devastated that the gold Asian man died. He was my favorite.
Eoin Glaister nails the aesthetic and feel he's going for here, even though the narrative and story don't come through as clearly as the video seems to want them to.
The ping pong and karaoke sections are fun, and the intro scene really does feel like an old space action scene. Where the video really shines is in the set designs, all of which looks great.
Overall the story and aesthetic don’t add much to ... read more
I guess Michael La Burt heard the guitar solo at the end, did 8 lines of coke and then shoved Joji into a kiss outfit and proceeded to cook up one of the worst music videos in Joji's discography.
What a mess.
First of all, why does the gold pyramid CGI during the field shots look like it was done from a guy on Fiver?
Also why is there a chick seizing up at 0:58?
Whoever edited this slop, please delete IMovie. There is a terrible film grain filter throughout the whole thing. The aspect ... read more
At least the drifting shots are nice...
This video feels like it's shot by two different directors. Maybe James Defina has schizophrenia?
The same could be said about the editor, maybe they swapped monitors half way through color grading. Also the cut's do not match the pace and tempo of the song. I know music videos cut faster than films but it's so jarring in songs like this.
Also why is Joji so obsessed with chains? They don't work in this video and serve as tacky ... read more
The bald head costume change interlude midway through and the Ice Cream slap segment in this video cement it as an endearing pairing for a very chill and quirky track. This lighthearted nature is emphasized by including fun outtakes at the end alongside the prop selection that includes classics like the energy sword from halo.
Overall, nothing crazy, just Joji roller skating around and larping as a gang member.
