Cigarettes are a cheat code in all forms of media and this music video is no different.
Unfortunately the immaculate vibes, color grading and cinematography is stunted by Joji’s acting and costume design that doesn't quite match the crisp clean quality of the sets. The half animal costume and fake blood/ arrow sticking out the back of joji drags down the cinematic experience the video was going for.
The opening and closing shots are stunning and iconic, both of which I think of ... read more
This video set up the foundation for the Glimpse Of Us Music video Joji would release years later and goes to show how early Joji was to the now timeless camcorder aesthetic.
This is arguably his most iconic video and for good reasons and even after Joji left 88 rising he would pay homage to these shots in If it Only Gets Better... Yes I am mainly talking about the ass clapping shots...
I remember seeing an interview clip somewhere where Joji explained he grew his hair out to look as ... read more
Director BRTHR should be banned from touching a camera after filming this video, whoever edited it should have their pc shot.
This is one of the worst music videos I've ever watched.
The video is bookended with 1 minute montages of some of the terrible visuals of asian women accompanied with the most jarring almost ironic sound design and vfx preset transitions. Unfortunately all 3 of these pitfalls carry through to the music section.
If this video was made to be terrible and then I ... read more
Maybe I'm crazy but Interpritive dancing as a big red furry chained to the bottom of an empty pool 1) isnt an enjoyable watch and 2) isn't visually interesting past the first 15 seconds.
I should say I'm never usually a fan of dance centric music videos in this vein, but it also dosn't help that the coreography looks like it was cooked up by a 15 year old girl in highscool for a theatre assignment.
*Imagine you are a sunflower* ass music video.
While the bath filled with blood shots remain iconic in joji's history the rest of the scenes are terrible, I think this video would have been a lot better if it entirely focused on the strong foundation of the bathtub set.
Besides the scenes the camerawork is all over the place and dizzying, it refuses to stay still at any point, the shot selection and editing is impossible to follow despite the director Mathew Dillon Cohen clearly having some sort of narrative planned for the video. ... read more
Joji's most iconic and beautiful ballad is contrasted with some of the most raw music video direction I have ever seen and it gives the song an entire new meaning.
The first 3 times I watched this video when it released back in 2022, I remember being convinced that joji had found, bought or borrowed this footage from someone, the footage felt so raw the idea of it being directed felt implausable to me. But then I found the director... Dan Streit is a genius and quite possibly the best ... read more
