yes, we get it. we're all tired of the RnB pop metal, sleep token, bad omens, president, bmth, jordan fish. yes, we understand. it's never enough of either. nobody likes it. it's always bad. every time. and we still review it.
"brutalist" is an interesting album where it feels like we're taking those things that nobody likes and we're experimenting with it even more. the end result is something that is decent. the production and mixing is dynamic and unusual ... read more
U sees underscores donning a fresh coat of glittery hyperpop paint that blends into the wall with the other artists who are also using the same exact shade of glittery hyperpop paint.
while the album's production and songwriting are enjoyable by that standard, this album feels more like a regression from "wallsocket's" intricate brutality and bluntness and more like a slip into familiarity of an excessively growing "safe" microgenre. it instead feels more ... read more
tennyson ditches the subdued and personal influence on 2022's "rot" in order to fit more snuggly into the "hyperpop :p bleehh xD rawr" influx that every other artist has found themself at.
while the music is more intricate, delicate, and pretty at times, that's about all there is to say. some tracks like "moose" and the closer "choose" find themselves at a sweet spot in this album, echoing aphex twin's drum patterns while still having ... read more
happy to report that volumes' newest LP "mirror touch" is NOT a dud! volumes delivers a serviceable and pleasant album after "happier?," which is an improvement in some ways and a downgrade in others.
mirror touch continues to see volumes going in a more stylized route that grabs traits from old albums and slaps them together on a new album. some songs feel grabbed from 2017's "different animals" and 2014's "no sleep." (though it's ... read more
as a big fan of "dark sun" for how the band managed to go into an electronic heavy and subdued sound in such an effective way, this song seemed like a continuation of dark sun's electronics without any of the bliss. the first two minutes of this song run fine with a head-bopping chorus that doesn't do a whole lot for me personally. this makes the bridge breakdown feel completely absurd and unearned, and just makes me feel as though this song should've had more punch in ... read more
yes, heavy, but not as carefully constructed as the songs on "american motor sports" the breakdowns on that album feel appropriate and heavy enough to where it doesn't take you out of the groove of the song. here, though, it almost feels like it was shoehorned in because he hasn't released something "heavy" in like two years. fine by all means. the chorus is not as memorable as anything that was on "american motor sports though" but still stands fine on ... read more
a lot of this works because of lulu and angels' abilities to create such a warm atmosphere. it truly feels like a fuzzy dreamy carpet for the it's short and sweet 37 minute runtime. nothing feels rushed or drawn out,
evokes a sense of home, and im always a sucker for that. the songs are beautifully constructed and happily playful, and serves as a beautiful add-on to their hyperpop albums
revisiting this album after the unfortunate "even in arcadia" reminds me of just how gorgeous this band's sound was. it still uses all elements of current sleep token, but it's more subdued and subtle that makes the occasional genre shift feel unexpected but deserved. these songs effectively build tension and climax perfectly. hypnosis is one of my favorite songs of all time, and the bridge is one of my favorite things ever.
it's their most sonically cohesive album and ... read more
as a long-time sleep token defender, this album has finally done something to me. it's unfortunate, disappointing, and disjointed, three words i wouldn't have even used to describe "Take Me Back To Eden" when it came out.
the worst thing this band ever did was delve into trap beats and then lose all means of how to build a cohesive song, let alone a cohesive album. the production is worse than ever, and even where there's a few moments of bliss like the gorgeous few ... read more
unforgivingly brutal and blunt, but it's a standout feature of the record. it's musically dynamic enough to stay interesting while telling a tragic story carefully, and never once left a bad taste in my mouth
ill definitely be visiting earlier into vylet pony's discography
spiritbox have always been great at atmosphere, and this album is no different. consistent, full of highs, and better and more mature than their debut, it's an improvement at nearly every step of the way, a wall (or.. tsunami..) of sound, beautiful but brutal, and a wonderful tribute to bill crook. courtney continues to bring monster vocals, and although her cleans feel a little more shrouded in production this go around, something about them blending in the music makes it feel symbolic to ... read more
i should like it, and i really do like the beginning half. reminds me of say that you will slightly. then that awful overblown crunchy guitar tone kicks in and it sounds like poop. please get a new producer. for the love of god. it should've maintained that sound. it definitely feels like it would've been a great break from that awful production, the bridge and ending are also really awkward
lyrical content is great though, these last two singles have actually had some great ... read more
