Legendary rapper Black Thought and groundbreaking producer Danger Mouse come together to make Cheat Codes.
Black Thought is arguably the greatest rapper ever. Every verse he delivers on this album is dense, fluid, and packed full of rhymes and bars. He comes on every verse operating at his best, and he works extremely well over this kind of production.
Danger Mouse’s production is sample based and has an incredible amount of layers to it. I love how ear-wormy almost all of these beats are. A lot of these beats have a very strong trip hop feel to them, some instrumentals on this album literally sound like they came from Portishead. There are some of the most unique beats of the decade on this album.
Because has one of the catchiest sample flips I have ever heard. Black Thought’s verse is, of course, incredible, and the song features an amazing verse from Joey Bada$$ as well.
The feature list is absolutely stacked. It has amazing features from MF DOOM, Raekwon, A$AP Rocky, Run The Jewels and more. Really the only drawback on this album is that some tracks do not stand out within the tracklist. None of them are bad by any stretch, but they are overshadowed by other incredible songs.
Overall, Danger Mouse and Black Thought created one of the best collaboration albums of the decade in Cheat Codes.
