Malcolm Todd - Do That Again

Malcolm Todd’s lyricism is a little too corny at times for this record to really make a statement, though vocally and instrumentally the record is solid.

Vince Staples - Cry Baby

I’m trying political times, when others have shied away from speaking out, Vince Staples comes through with his biggest political statement yet. Genre bending instrumentals, strong lyricism about injustice and political instability, and overall cohesion throughout the record makes this the strongest rap record of 2026 thus far.

Cocteau Twins - Treasure
92

A common complaint with this record is you can’t understand what is being said, but in reality that vocal usage only adds to the dark ethereal sound that makes you feel like you are floating while almost being cursed at the same time. Treasure serves as blueprint for the dream pop wave that would come later, as Cocteau Twins are able to use an atmospheric wall of sound full of reverb, delays, and hypnotic rhythm for a groundbreaking record.

Metallica - Ride the Lightning
100

Metallicas sophomore album is such a step up from their debut in songwriting, pace, production, performances, and energy, as they created a versatile thrash metal record that’s truly electrifying. Ride the Lightning feels like a perfect description for the instrumentation of this masterpiece, since the tempo and aggressiveness pairs so well with the themes of death, war, and entrapment, all encompassing one hell of a ride.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
93

Powerslave takes heavy guitar driven energy and pairs it with refined lyricism to capture a band at its peak performance. While Iron Maiden dives into mythology, the burdens of power, and mortality, their instrumentals and vocalists are ambitious, yet consistent, for a heavy metal record that is both decade and career defining.
