I obviously am not naive enough to listen to a project like this expecting masterful lyricism, or any sort of consistency in quality. Really interesting and enjoyable listening experience. Very short, concise tracklist, every single song contributes to the story about "the plugs"
Enjoyable. Nothing particularly special, but it's a fun soundscape and some good lyrics, if slightly generic, sprinkled around.
As someone who has never been into The Weeknd and has not enjoyed his previous albums nor do I enjoy pop in the slightest, I am shocked. This album is incredible. The grandiose, progressive production combined with Abel's floating vocals creates a beautiful soundscape, and this has by FAR the best lyrics from any project by him, in terms of consistency. I'll be honest, what brings this album down for me is, astonishingly, the production. For the first several songs, Madlib really didn't craft particularly enjoyable or memorable beats, but it picked up hugely later on. The best thing about this album is that in amongst the good tracks, there's great ones, and in amongst those, there's a couple of perfect ones.
