Sturgill Simpson, under the guise of Johnny Blue Skies, opens the album by stating he's weaponizing his autism. And my god, he does. To glorious effect. What an odd but wonderful fucking album. It's contemplative, horny, unabashed, and funny as hell.
took a while to come around but this 2000s-core album just really grooves.
I like some of the ideas on here. It's got some brutal grooves that are catchy and a bit ear-warmy. And the drums are epic. There's a lot of raw emotional power.
However, Sevastopol sounds like you took Death Grip's industrial production and threw in French Laura Les on top of it because you thought it was funny. The emotional impact for me was ruined then and there...in the first song.

"Country" music is fully capable of conveying a lot of emotional charge and sharing great storytelling. All with beautiful, tasteful instrumentation that not only gives a sense of place but also is free from that tacky nails-on-chalkboard bullshit you hear teenagers blaring out their truck built for muddin' that ain't ever left the pavement.
