Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine
92

i am so grateful that this album exists.

i've been an irrevocable fan of ariana since the mid-2010s, but even before then, i always found her voice astounding, enjoying everything of hers that would play when i was just out and about. ariana has never made mediocre music, and i anticipated every new era highly. this was the longest gap between ariana albums, and i think 'eternal sunshine' was worth all the wait and then some.

i'll get the less good out of the way first ... read more

in all of tove lo's music, since her very first ep, a quality she has never blunted is its humanness, her humanness. she has proved for years that pop music can revel in the flaws of the artists making it.

like many, my introduction to lo was through the ultra mega undeniable smash hit 'habits', a relic of 2010s pop and truthfully, a modern classic. it has aged so excellently, even over a decade later when a lot of the music from that time is considered "great" ... read more

one of the most surprising things i've listened to in a really long time.

miley has always occupied a very unique space in the pop girl canon for me. never an outright favorite of mine, but never one that i couldn't compliment when her name arose. many would agree that her career has been defined by her chameleonic tendencies, both aesthetically and musically. of course, we all know the undeniable hits she has under her belt. i love 'we can't stop' just as much as ... read more

going in a bit of a reverse ordering listening to madison's discography - beyond the singles, 'life support' just wasn't my thing when it first came out - and i can confidently say this is her best album. a lot of my gripes about her tone and the porous production in her other work don’t come up nearly as frequently here.

i'd heard 'spinnin' and 'sweet relief' many times before and they introduce the listener into the album’s atmosphere ... read more

as someone who listens to pop more than anything, madison's music has continued to frustrate me for quite some time, all the way back to her debut ep. i, like many people, love pop because of its ability to shapeshift and stretch and absorb the influences of other genres. i've always felt like madison's approach is too cautious, and 'locket' is another apprehensive example of binding herself to a musical identity that refuses to have flaws that aren't ... read more

fantastic.

i don't think jade's time in little mix is the sole reason why she was able to make such a great pop album - jade HERSELF is why this is a great pop album. her ear for melody, unique production, and tangible love for the craft shows in every single track.

truth be told, 'angel of my dreams' took me a really long time to come around to. it is one of the most chaotic pop songs i've ever heard, but i'm glad i've warmed up to its unconventionality. ... read more
