a much fresher take on Minecraft's sound compared to what Lena Raine had to offer. Is it perfect? No, not really - C418's work for Minecraft had such a distinct sound and I don't believe it'll ever be matched - but Microsoft is clearly taking this game in a different direction now, one that feels a bit more corporate, so honestly? I'll take this shake-up - if you can't meet the quality of C418's work, why not try something new? In the end I actually quite like what Cherof has done here (and ... read more
I've never been that into Lena Raine's music - i have nothing against her, I just think her sound choices are a little uninteresting, which is a problem in this instance specifically, because Minecraft's musical identity is so distinct, unique and well-established by now. I think what she's made here *is* interesting, but is it *Minecraft?* no, not really - it sounds generic and it dips its toes into fantasy-like musical areas that stray from what made C418's score so ... read more
These are good! I still have problems with mixing, but what can you do - what Hakita lacks in the production / mixing department, he makes up for with creative compositions and interesting sound choices. The World Looks Red is one of my favourite tracks in the entire game, I absolutely love it; feels so essential to what ultrakill is all about.
feels a bit plain in places but generally it's quite pretty and sometimes beautiful when it feels like it (lady boston comes to mind - that choir always gets me).
very hit or miss in my opinion. this album's style works when it's one or two songs on a playlist, but listening through the whole thing is not something i ever really want to do again - the WHOLE thing sounds very samey. very boring album.
Act 2 upped the bar for the soundtrack so far in my opinion. There are so many bangers that help each level be so much more memorable - Death Odyssey, Deep Blue, Dune Eternal - they're all incredible. And don't even get me started on the Heresy layer - Chord of the crooked saints is an absolute punch in the nose, the grandness of Altars of Apostasy made that level such a powerful and epic experience, and the castle vein harpsichord showing up, followed by Gabe's dramatic speech and boss... ... read more
I'm always surprised that some of these songs still get stuck in my head every now and then (and not in a bad way either, so he clearly did *something* right with this album). I think maybe it's a bit too long for its own good, though - the ideas and sounds stop being so fresh when there's not that many switchups or changes in direction across its 12 tracks. It drags a little at the end with a non-insignificant amount of tracks that are less lyrically-focused, which are all fine ... read more
