Put this in the background while I did chores today...nice. Will sit down with it and update my score soon. Great marimba chops, haven't heard anything like it before.
A really varied experience from Joyce Manor! I know I'm one of the lower scorers but this was nice. I think the band slips into a familiar vein of songwriting here that you would get from a Liquid Mike or Tony Molina album (short, sweet power pop/pop-punk) without sticking to one sound for too long. You kind of get a bit of everything on this LP, and I appreciate that.
Edit: I am no longer one of the lower scorers π I am average
When you hear the title "Fuzz Sounds", what pops into YOUR head?
Specifically, for me, the band Weezer (often described as distortion-flavored Beach Boys)...more broadly, power pop as a genre. But this album is not exactly that. Though this still retains a compositional charm á la The Rentals (especially in the first half), the lo-fi aesthetic and medium-to-slow tempos blend with the former to create something unique and might I add, pretty good. I do have to agree with of the ... read more
Six years later, the "Cobbmeister" adjusts the scope of Zerwee back to a less conceptual, EP-size form that serves as an homage to not only Weezer's 90s output, but their comeback era. This is definitely the best Zerwee has sounded, in production and in songwriting.
100% worth a re-listen if you were on the fence about this album like I was. Most of the acoustic/piano ballads didn't grow on me but everything else did. Great pop sensibilities, memorable guitar work...(wip)
Geekazoid leans into some of rock's most common tropes a bit much for me here, but these bonus tracks still manage to move the crowd.
Similar issues with production (vocals mostly), despite the simpler compositions they sound even less in the mix.

Emulating the past, complaining about the past, and never doing much past that.
No angst, no memorable harmonies, no melodic twists, and lyricism that is too surface level. I feel like these ideas needed some extra time to develop (what a better time than the pandemic, right?).
Some impressive moments sprinkled into a pretty standard, short post-hardcore/emo pop package.
Sci-fi love triangles containing characters we know barely anything about. Wait, Dondo's got a huge WHAT? Instant masterpiece.
I do love a majority of the songs off of this but there is nothing to praise about the writing.
Tony Molina did it again.
"No, I don’t write songs about my personal life or anything like that. Mostly I don’t. It’s really uncomfortable to do, so I’ve never even really attempted it that much, it’s much easier to come up with some simple thing that doesn’t apply to me and make that the song." - Tony Molina, 2018
I don't think this guy has the self-confidence to grow out of his box. Yes, the arrangements here you can consider "way more ... read more
I can't think of a record that flourishes nostalgia more than this one.
Forgot to rate this one.
What can I really say about it? Great bass tone.
The track-to-track flow on this debut project is absolutely stellar. The prevalence of acoustic guitars is fresh, Aidan Cole provides a memorable (/pos) vocal performance, and the band knows just when to sprinkle those nostalgic melodies (without going overboard).
(shoutout Ryen from OZMA on production here haha)
It really showcases how strong that indie rock sound is in providing a listenable foundation. I think people wrongly associate aging with lower quality (in the case of music, no better year to prove this wrong than 2025).
Pretty inoffensive stuff overall, I wish more stuck out.
This is NOT a well written album. The hooks are deprived of development through the course of EVERY SINGLE SONG. You can't just beat your (already lyrically repetitive) choruses into the ground without them depreciating.
I get the choice for the satirical lyrics and well, cheeky vocal delivery as a way to cope with our problems and the world around us, but it doesn't mesh well for me here. It's not an horrible album by any means, I'm just thoroughly disappointed.
i'm assembling a party of misfits and miscreants to track down the rest of this song...
second jimmy eat world song i'm ever hearing. neat everything, i just wish there was a bridge or solo. will be listening to whatever album comes out tho!
