The vocal effects on Yachty make or (slightly) break some of these songs, and that's a shame. Love the ambience.
2025: This album has shrunk as it's made its way into my normal rotation.
First half was a sleeper (negative), second half was a sleeper (positive)
I don't dig the production and vocal mixing on this one, asides from the instrumental or pseudo-instrumental tracks.
Very strong chorus, not fully won over on the bridge or this whole new wavey sound yet.
Despite the vocal and drum mix (the production as a whole being a bit muffled/rough), the songwriting does come out on top here compared to Odalisque. Great highs.
This feels like a depression of the softer tracks off of HUM's Downward Is Heavenward, lacking the raw punch and rewarding song structure of its predecessor. Songs seem to never leave the foundation on which they are built. Placencia is great, though.
The production feels just as abrasive (in a good, Pixies sort of way) as previous projects, I just feel like there was a failure to fully execute or differentiate itself. The hooks make or break songs since sometimes there isn't much else to offer.
Really good, and REALLY diverse. The first and second halves sound like two different albums, and I enjoy both (maybe with bias towards the power poppier second half).
It's hard to explain why the soft vocals work with the SUPER raw production and killer riffs. It draws me in a lot more than the previous record, and I can't explain why!
This is strong. Few misses, great songwriting. I don't know how JoCo is so good at this.
I've always found myself interested in SOAD from an early age, though I've never taken it upon myself to fully give them a shot. Though I see my score shrinking as I give it further listens, this first one has certainly encouraged me to keep going.
Everything here needed to be a bit more impressive to actually work sonically and emotionally. The album is rather melodramatic sometimes but not really anything too offensive, most of the time.
The rawness of this LP is its charm but also a disrupter of quality on many of these tracks. Some tracks just become too nonsensical (musically, I'm not even gonna talk about Francis' lyrics on this album) to enjoy.
If everything was just toned down a bit and they got a good producer, imagine the album they could have made! Oh wait.
The Red Album succeeds most in its more experimental tracks. I enjoy some of the lesser tracks however as guilty pleasures.
Thought I Knew is kind of the only one I don't really see having any redeemable qualities.
Decent string of songs. Second track feels well rounded, not sure about the other three. Production is good, though! Can't wait for the next full LP.
