twenty one pilots - Clancy

So I've had enough time to process this record and overall, I am very happy with how this one turned out. Even as Scaled And Icy's number one defender, its crazy how much of a step up in quality this one is. While the songs don't reach the same highs as Trench, Clancy might have one of, if not the single tightest first halves of any Twenty One Pilots album. The first 6 songs on Clancy are an absolutely insane experience, constantly pushing the listener through wild genre switches ... read more

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
87

Siamese Dream is a very strong and pure distillation of alternative rock. It really is just the band members captured in a room playing these crazy multi-phased songs and using their instruments as creatively as possible. While the songs are a bit lengthy, I never once found myself bored due to the constant motion the record has and how off kilter Billy Corgan's vocals are. Seriously what a strange voice but it really adds to the experience. My only real complaint was that I felt the song ... read more

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
96

Holy crap I absolutely adore this album. I've been on a quest to listen to a lot of new albums this year and its led me to some absolutely crazy results. I'm not super familiar with Post-Punk so I had no idea what to really expect with this one, but I was absolutely blown away by literally every single song. The songwriting is absolutely immaculate. Its multilayered and and never goes in any direction I was expecting it too. The production is also really good, and I love the very ... read more

Thank You Scientist - Stranger Heads Prevail

I think I made a very good choice for my first ever experience with jazz fusion. Who woulda thought that emo prog rock jazz fusion would work so well. Absolutely insane album. While a lot of the songs end up having similar structures, each song has this constant push and pull with numerous tempo and time signature changes to keep you on your toes and give you something crazy to sink your teeth into. The production is also absolutely stellar with incredible guitar tones, very colorful horns, and ... read more

Weezer - Pinkerton
92

pinkerton shows a band functioning at their highest level as a group effort while also providing a deeply fascinating character study of the lead singer, all contained in some of the tightest songwriting i've ever heard with gloriously messy production. ive never listened to a record that has broken me as much as an individual as pinkerton has. whether its the visceral screams on Tired Of Sex, the pathetic and creepy infatuation on Across The Sea or just the absolute devastation of giving up on ... read more

Green Day - American Idiot

i fucking love this album dude and what a way to soundtrack my early middle school years. while the political commentary of this album was mostly lost on me as a kid so its just not really what comes to mind when i think of this record, american idiot still stands as just an amazing collection of pop punk bangers all wrapped in an honest to god story of a broken teenager trying to find his way. songs like holiday, st jimmy, and letterbomb make me bug out with how insanely catchy and high energy ... read more

Radiohead - In Rainbows

this is the big one. In Rainbows presents me with one of the tightest and most refined collections of songs i've ever had the pleasure of listening to, and is one of the best embodiments of what i personally love about music. at the very core of this project lies a band firing on all cylinders and having fun while doing so. songs like Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, 15 Step, Reckoner, Nude, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, and Videotape will stand the test of time as some of my favorite songs ever. even the ... read more

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
93

this is just such a fantastic record. it manages to have such a perfect blend of electropop and hip hop all while tackling a very important issue, but not taking itself too seriously. its an album that makes you think about the current state of the world and how we all live in it, but it isn't afraid to have some fun with it when it wants to. the project is able to seamlessly bounce between incredibly fun songs like Superfast Jellyfish, White Flag, Sweepstakes, and Rhinestone Eyes, to then ... read more

twenty one pilots - Trench

this is absolutely my favorite album of all time. even though that title does draw a lot from personal reasons, i still think that this album absolutely holds up in a vacuum. this album is absolutely incredible. the songwriting is top notch, the production ranges from gritty and intense to immensely beautiful, and tyler joseph really channels his voice on this one to sing like an angel. it really is crazy how this album is nothing but hit after hit. not only is each song nearly, if not actually ... read more
